Users on Facebook, the ultra successful social networking site, virtually given birth to a new user-generated genre: the “Ten Reasons Why You Should Date an XYZ (name of your profession goes here) List.”

Poll: For Valentine's Day do you...

Poll: For Valentine's Day do you...

Lists have been published on the site for Why You Should Date a Single Mom, a Geek, a Wrestler and hundreds of other categories. Not to be outdone, the medical professions have also posted “Ten Reasons Why You Should Date: a Physician, a Physical Therapist, an EMT, and other medical professions.

Nurses, of course, have their ten reasons. Here is one Top Ten Reasons You Should Date a Nurse List, courtesy of a group on Facebook:

1. They can help you get over a hangover or sickness.

2. Bedbaths!

3. The uniform.

4. They are exposed to so many xrays, it’s like a form of birth control.

5. You will never need to buy condoms, paracetamol, toothbrushes or any hospital supplies.

6. They know how to handle bodily fluids!

7. Nothing shocks a nurse, they have always seen smaller or indeed bigger!

8. They won’t be disgusted by your toilet habits.

9. They are experienced in manual evacuation when you are full of you know what.

10. They know how to handle the human body.

these are the WORST REASONS I have ever heard of................not one positive thing about who and what we really are and do. Someone clearly needs to re-evaluate this list.
I am more than a Toilet Habits person and certainly more to me than digging out poop!!!!!
I see enuff of that at work.....and if my significant other had that problem they would go to get medical help elsewhere like everyone else.

You have to be comfortable in your own skin as a nurse to appreciate these top ten.
Nurses are always rated very highly in polls on professions that are most trusted or perceived to be most honest. After thrity years in nursing I can tell you I have seen small or bigger, bloodier or stinkier!

PS. I think these were meant to be a JOKE! Sorta like something you would see on SNL or late night show. Of course if you wanna be serious, it would be like, they can take stitches out with out flinching, They can give enimas, and have a license to put in IV's, wonder if you get a discount? come on, its a joke, if you want serious, read the news.

Well the Male nurses think this is list is pretty funny while the Women think it's disgusting and/or repulsive. Here's the thing fellas... Past nurses have had to fight for every scrap of respect we current nurses enjoy. And to put items like numbers 8 and 9 on a top ten list of reasons to date a nurse marginalizes what we do. I do not stand in judgement of any one elses opinion. I, personally, find this list professionally offensive.

This completely disagrees with my values. I represent the Christian segment of the nursing population, and while I am not against humor (I enjoy a bit of Monty Python, myself), this is plain awful, and doesn't represent the true qualities one could admire in a nurse. Nor does disagreeing with the type of humor mean that someone is incapable of taking on a job in the health career (I have been working in the health field happily as a volunteer since I was 13), nor does it mean that they are unable to get a date. Instead, it shows a lack of respect and dignity, which are vital to success as a nurse.

I love this. Anyone who is repulsed by this humor is in the wrong profession and probably can't get a date either. Who would want to date someone so stone cold? You have to be able to make fun of yourself. In My Humble Opinion...from another male nurse.
