2 Teen Girls Charged in Nursing Resident Abuse
AP
December 04, 2008
ALBERT LEA, Minn. – Two teenage girls who worked at a nursing home have been charged with abuse, accused of taunting, spitting on and groping residents who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.
According to the criminal complaint, filed Monday, 19-year-old Brianna Broitzman and 18-year-old Ashton Larson laughed earlier this year as they spat in residents’ mouths, poked and groped their breasts and genitals, and at times mocked them until they screamed.
Broitzman and Larson, who worked as part-time aides at the home, have been charged as adults.
Larson’s father disputed the charges against his daughter in a statement issued to and read on NBC’s “Today” show Thursday.
“Not all of the charges are as they appear. Much of this has been distorted by the news media,” Michael Larson said in the statement.
“My daughter was doing nothing more than performing the duties of her job.”
No one answered the phone Thursday morning at Broitzman’s home. There was no information in court records on attorneys for either teen.
Four other teens who worked with them at the Good Samaritan Society were charged as juveniles for failing to report the incidents.
A total of eight teens were allegedly involved in the incidents, but there was no record of criminal charges being filed against two of them.
Broitzman and Larson are charged with assault, abuse of a vulnerable adult by a caregiver, abuse of a vulnerable adult with sexual contact, disorderly conduct and failing to report suspected maltreatment. All are gross misdemeanors.
If found guilty, Broitzman and Larson “most likely will face suspended jail sentences and probation, so they’d have the threat of jail hanging over them if they get in more trouble,” Freeborn County Attorney Craig Nelson told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis.
The Minnesota Department of Health released a report in August showing that 15 residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia disorders were abused at the facility between Jan. 1 and May 1.
According to the complaint filed Monday, one of the aides said the group gathered at work or school to “talk and laugh about the incidents.”
Mark Anderson, administrator at the Good Samaritan Society in Albert Lea, told WCCO-TV that the past few months have been difficult for the staff, the home’s residents and their families.
“We are just really thankful that the proceedings are moving forward and hopefully can see some closure to this whole process,” Anderson said.

Nursing schools for girls are offering various professional and advance career making courses to the girls. There are many qualified professionals and trainers to offer excellent education as well as other additional courses such as nurse training, medical billing etc.

That is a disgusting thing that those girls did. They are old enough to know right from wrong and that these elderly people deserve to be treated with respect even though they do have alzheimer's.

Wow nurses, some of you are ready to send these young girls to eternal damnation. A little harsh. How about opening your big hearts, and looking for some forgiveness. None of us knows why these girls behaved as they did. They might have been damaged, or abused in some way as children. Judge not least ye by judged; right my compassionate friends?

I guess these girls have never heard the saying, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," because one day you just might get old. (If they're lucky enough). And this is the next generation? I'M SCARED.

Sad! My grandmother passed away with Alzheimer's after being lovingly cared for by my family. If my loved one had been a victum, all I have to say is, "Never mind the wrath of GOD" beware of the Wrath of a Brunette!!!!!

I wish i could spit on their nasty selves. 18 19 they are adults and the better be treated as so. The father need to sit down she's old enough toknow right from wrong. i have a six year old who would never do things like this. They need some old school beat downs from their parents and jail time. Lock then up and let and make then do community with adults not so codepented and let them try it then.

This is sad to say the least. Just know that God does not sleep and they will pay for what they have done one way or another!

This is absolutely disgusting! It's no wonder teens have such a stereo tyoe hanging over there heads! I statrted working ina hospital as a patient care tech at 19 and I would NEVER dream of doing anythign like that to any of the patients. I think they should be locked away, I don't care that they are only 18 and 19, they knoew what they were doing! And every one else that knew what they were doing should have turned them in immediatly! Ugh.

I prosecuted cases like this. This isn't the worst. It's appalling how some people treat the elderly (and disabled).
