Calif. Octuplets' Mom's Veil of Secrecy Vanishes

WHITTIER, Calif. – The veil of secrecy octuplets’ mother Nadya Suleman shrouded herself in for more than a week was lifted Thursday with the release of public documents showing that the 33-year-old struggled with depression for years until she finally began to realize her childhood dream of having a huge family.

Suleman, who now has 14 children, told doctors she battled with depression for years after she was injured in a riot in 1999 at the state mental hospital where she worked.

The doctors’ reports were included in more than 300 pages of documents released to The Associated Press by the state Division of Workers’ Compensation on the same day NBC released excerpts of Suleman’s first interview since giving birth last month. Among other things, the documents reveal that Suleman collected more than $165,000 in disability payments between 2002 and 2008 for an injury she said left her in near-constant pain and helped end her marriage.

Meanwhile, Suleman told NBC what her mother and others have said since the octuplets were born: that she always wanted a huge family to make up for the isolation she felt as an only child.

“That was always a dream of mine, to have a large family, a huge family,” she said. “I just longed for certain connections and attachments with another person that … I really lacked, I believe, growing up.”

In the interview — scheduled to air on the “Today” show Monday and again Tuesday on “Dateline” — Suleman calls her childhood “pretty dysfunctional.”

In the state report, however, doctors indicate she had a happy childhood. She told them she was an above-average high school student, enjoyed being a cheerleader, had many friends and stayed out of trouble. She said her parents were loving and supportive.

As an adult, however, she said she often battled depression as she struggled to get pregnant and particularly after her injury.

In the report, Suleman told a doctor she had three miscarriages. Another doctor disputed that number, saying she had two ectopic pregnancies, a dangerous condition in which a fertilized egg implants somewhere other than in the uterus. She told NBC she struggled for seven years before finally giving birth to her first child in 2001 through in vitro fertilization.

I pray for this lady and her children i have been working since i was 16 years old and i'm so tired i look around and i see people having children and not one time paying attention to them, i have 3 and i know how hard it is to try to give each of them the same attention and i just can't imagine how she will do it, i guess if i could live off other people (if this is the case with this lady) then i imagine it might be easier but us full time working moms do our best to raise our children right and i do feel cheated when i think that i work everyday to make ends meet and then to think i maybe paying for this woman and her children i know she's not the only one out there who does this i just feel the goverment needs to wake up and realize something drastic needs to take place or we are in for a bad deal, i have a disabled child and we can't get approved for ssi cause they claim we make to much money we live in a small town and my husband is currently unemployed due to these lay offs and still no luck i get 200 bucks taken out of my paycheck biweekly for medical insurance i wonder who is going to help her with these hospital bill and those to come my heart is broken to thing it maybe me in some form or fashion, hell i can't even afford to pay for my own childs medical bills, where has the world gone to.... I continue to pray for the best for all of us.....

I wish they would leave her alone.. its plenty of mothers out her having babies that are unfit.. I see mothers addicted to crack giving birth all the time..so if she wants to have a big family, more power to her.

Oh, and what about the idiot who donated the sperm, I understand that it was a friend of hers who donated all the sperm for each pregnancy. I also heard today that she has gone into hiding as death threats have been made of her life. I can understand people being angry and making no bones about what they think of her, but to want to kill her!?!?!? I believe that this is more drama that she is creating for herself. If she's got half a brain cell she is probably realizing what an idiot she's making of herself and hiding out to keep from facing people.

"Most of you nurses are haters. You did find all of the negative in this story. Does anyone have a positive comment? It just might be that this woman makes a better mom than you think. Children have been raised under worse circumstances, and turned out fine. Best of luck to you hate filled nurses; enjoy tearing down some other persons life."

saltyscalop, it appears that this woman is doing a good job of making herself look bad, she doesn't need our help. Anyone who is not able to see the idiocy of this needs to have their own head examined. I can't see how she could possibly be a good mother when she is not, in my humble opinion, living in reality..
I heard her make the comment myself that she is not on welfare and that she will never be on welfare. At the age of 30, or whatever age she was when she went on SSI, she could not possibly have worked long enough to have paid into SS what she has already collected from them. Thus, it's coming from TAX PAYERS pockets. THAT IS A FORM OF WELFARE!!!!!! "Financial or other aid provided, especially by the government, to people in need."
    Definition found at:
    http://education.yahoo.com/reference/dictionary/entry/welfare;_ylt=...
(This kind of abuse is the reason SS is possibly going to go broke before those of us who have been paying in to it for 30 or 40 years ever benefit.
Then yesterday I heard that she planned to support her children on student loans while she went to school to be a counselor. WHAT!?!?!?!?! I've been a college student, I've had student loans. There is no way on God's green earth that a person can support 15 people, pay tuition and books on student loans. (unless of course she's planning on committing fraud there as well).
And to the one who stated that it is of no concern to those on this thread, oh, but it is a concern if she is collecting SSI because SHE IS ON WELFARE, WE ARE SUPPORTING HER.
And as for her "education", how can anyone with a college education not understand that it is welfare.

This unfortunate woman obviously has some real issues. I really hope all her children will have happy and meaningful lives. It would be great if she could live up to her expectations and be the mother she sees herself as. Time will tell. The doctor who knowingly impregnated this lady should have to step up and take responsibility for them like any other father in this country is legally obligated to. I know he's not the biological father, and he got her pregnant under the context of providing a clinical service. I bet this doctor would have thought twice if he knew that it was possible, that he could held to some sort of parental liability to impregnating this lady. I guess these docs are lucky that nobodies had the idea to peruse this in litigation, yet.

I was an only child and was raised by my single father after my mom left when i was really young. Yea i missed having that connection with another sibling but at least she had both her parents support. I am being married this summer at 29 and will have my children when they can be provided for not just because i long to have them. This woman is selfish plain and simple, she never gave a thought about the life her children will now have to suffer with.

This is appalling! The doctor who implanted the embryos should have his license revoked. She sounds like an unstable person without a clue or finances to raise this family. The children, if they survive, will be cheated. How selfish and destructive.

We shouldn't judge others....Until you have walked in the shoes of another person, then you shouldn't cast the first stone. You have to realize here also that the media has a tendancy to make things sound much worse than they are. No one got upset when a 68 year old women carried her daughters baby. So why get upset about this. It doesn't directly affect you or your life so why waste your time and energy getting upset about it. She will have to deal with it and the consequences and the lord will find a way to provide for those children. God Bless.

I blame the Dr. in all of this. All he had to do was say no to the mother. he abused the IVF program. Now the children will suffer. retardation? deformity? attention? and, what about the six others. homework? attention they crave at their ages? fun things? omg, stop me now.

OMG! How can you get disability for pain anywhere and then even try to carry a baby. Anyone that as carried a baby knows you get back pain thre the pregranty's. She should go to jail for fraud for collecting all that money. And if she was that depressed was she taking med while pregant, and is she going to get depressed again while trying to takecare of those kids. She just wants money and attention, selfish B---h. Take the kids away!

""There's so many things to comment on this case. Where should I begin. First of all this woman will not cash in on any book deals or television shows if we as consumers refuse to contribute to this fiasco! Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive children after one year of trying. This woman was never infertile. Going through infertility myself, I beleive the entire fertility industry should be scrutinized. This doctor agreed to perform this procedure on a already fertile woman to boost his clinic and make his success rates look better. I bet your bottom dollar. When an infertile couple seeks treatment, the odds of them conceiving is quite miniscule (you'll probably have better odds hitting lotto or getting struck by lightning). Those that do conceive usually miscarriage. Sucessful treatment usually occur with those who have previously given birth. Doctors never advertise this. I complained about a fertility clinic and was dismissed as a patient the day after close to seven thousand dollars was delivered to my home. (This was paid out of my pocket). The clinic refuses to reimburse me, I was callously told to sell the medication on EBAY. If any one out there can assist me with this matter I will truly appreciate this. email me at deealien2000@yahoo.com
