WHITTIER, Calif. – The veil of secrecy octuplets’ mother Nadya Suleman shrouded herself in for more than a week was lifted Thursday with the release of public documents showing that the 33-year-old struggled with depression for years until she finally began to realize her childhood dream of having a huge family.
Suleman, who now has 14 children, told doctors she battled with depression for years after she was injured in a riot in 1999 at the state mental hospital where she worked.
The doctors’ reports were included in more than 300 pages of documents released to The Associated Press by the state Division of Workers’ Compensation on the same day NBC released excerpts of Suleman’s first interview since giving birth last month. Among other things, the documents reveal that Suleman collected more than $165,000 in disability payments between 2002 and 2008 for an injury she said left her in near-constant pain and helped end her marriage.
Meanwhile, Suleman told NBC what her mother and others have said since the octuplets were born: that she always wanted a huge family to make up for the isolation she felt as an only child.
“That was always a dream of mine, to have a large family, a huge family,” she said. “I just longed for certain connections and attachments with another person that … I really lacked, I believe, growing up.”
In the interview — scheduled to air on the “Today” show Monday and again Tuesday on “Dateline” — Suleman calls her childhood “pretty dysfunctional.”
In the state report, however, doctors indicate she had a happy childhood. She told them she was an above-average high school student, enjoyed being a cheerleader, had many friends and stayed out of trouble. She said her parents were loving and supportive.
As an adult, however, she said she often battled depression as she struggled to get pregnant and particularly after her injury.
In the report, Suleman told a doctor she had three miscarriages. Another doctor disputed that number, saying she had two ectopic pregnancies, a dangerous condition in which a fertilized egg implants somewhere other than in the uterus. She told NBC she struggled for seven years before finally giving birth to her first child in 2001 through in vitro fertilization.

This is a sad state of affairs. My biggest question is where did the money come from to pay for the IVF treatment??? If she was receiving welfare dollars which I know is not much where or where did the money come from??? Is the doctor getting something out of this? Or did the doctor do this as a research experiment? Some scientist are crazy and will attempt such studies to determine if such an experiment will work. I wonder if the patient paid nothing. A pharmaceutical company donated the medication. Kaiser takes medi-cal so the cost of births are paid and care are covered financially. From a scientific point of view the doctor would cover his basis. Kaiser gets involved knows if they are able to deliver 8 healthy premies they will demonstrate their superior care to the public. The mother has demonstrated her ability to deliver 6 children, so her uterus is capable of holding more than one baby. Also, the mother is not functioning on all 6 cylinders. So, if the doctor is able to pull off implanting all of the eggs, great. If the mother loses the pregnancy then the doctors experiment demonstrates it is not possible. But!!! If all babies survive great! Kaiser keeps the babies healthy! Great! Then what about the Mother of all of those children...Doctor is not stupid...All survive. In comes Extreme Home Makeover, book deals, movies, interviews on Oprah, Dr. Phil, 20/20 voila....It is a win win! Science proves the almost impossible, Entertainment gets a story, The world gets a freak show. A mother gets her delusion of grandeur.... a large family. But, the sadest part about the whole story is what about the children!!! What will truly happen with these children?

different stroke for different folks, I've got to say that this is obsession in full because she hasn't seen any thing wrong or questionable about what she does- having to let the kids depend on grants.
I WILL LIKE HER TO RE-VISIT THE ISSUE OF HER DEPRESSION in due time so that she does not go ahead to have another set of children.
Contrary to the popular saying that "the more, the merrier", this is rather "the more, the hardship".
this is enough for reflection I guess.

If you're suffering from depression through a crisis that caused the acute illness, you go get help. You don't get your uterus implanted with eight fertilized eggs while you're scraping by on SSI and food stamps to support the other six children that you already have! This woman has no foundation for how to make a well-rounded judgement. She brings fourteen children down with her. Not only is she going to feed her unresolved depressive issues to her children, but she will cause them to suffer economically as all fourteen children will require 4.2 million to raise them to age 18. There are definitely those who really need to have their tubes tied!

First, The MD should be Reprimanded and suspended. Evidently, as she was already receiving state funding (food stamps and SSI for one child, ADC for the other 5), the subsequent implantations were paid for by the state (probably the first 6 also). Seems that needs to be looked into for fraud and other charges on both her and the MD. Second, It should have been REALLY obvious, she has issues. Personally, someone should really get into her to find out which personality was dominant at the times of implantation, etc. She sould have been on meds and checked to see if she was taking them before the first set. I even read where her mother said when she and her children get released, she and her father are leaving. It should be obvious this female is looking for handouts for life. She expecting someone to provide a bigger place (2 bedrooms for 15 people? PLEASE), baby clothes and food and whatever special needs these children will need that the state won't provide. The biggest mistake was NOT givinh her a tubal ligation or hys after this group. There is always the possibility that in 12 to 28 months, she will try again. Please excuse the typos.

wow, so much negativity - we can only guess as to her motives but maybe she will be a wonderful mother - maybe not -only time will tell -having financial resources does not make for good parenting just less financial stress - if she makes enough money from her book/tv deals then good for her -then your tax dollar won't havre to support her -she obviously made enough to pay for invitro -and that ain't cheap - let's cross our fingers and hope for the best!

I am married, my husband and I both work full time, and we have four kids. We struggle to pay our bills, feed the family, and have enough extra money to go and have fun as a family..because nothing is cheap anymore. I think this woman is going to have a hard time..and she thinks she was depressed before? I too always wanted kids, but there's a big difference between wanting..and being able to afford. It's now fair to expect everyone else to help her, like the taxpayers and all the book and tv deals, and even her family. But I hope she does get a lot of help, not just financially but emotionally too, because being a mom is a very hard job and she will need support. I'm not sure if I'm convinced that she knows what she's getting into!

How does someone who suffers from lower back injuries carry eight babies to beyond 30 weeks gestation?
I have worked in the antenatal and labor and delivery units of three of the best hospitals in Chicago and i have had experience taking care of a bed ridden mother's of triplets for 10 and more weeks. Who by the way where not suffering from previous back problems. This women whom has been paid for her supposed disabilities from her work related injury.. Sounds like a scam to me. I think it explains why we have so many people who are in such a mess. We as a society allow this type of thing to happen .
We then pay for it through the poor distribution of public medical assistance. The Doctor who implanted her eggs should lose his license and be fined to prevent other unethical practioners to think twice prior to entering into such an agreement again . And most importantly this women should be made to pay back all the money she has scammed from her disability claim. We wonder why this country is so far in debt.I have not even entered the argument of what type of mother she is likely to make. I think it is one thing to have a child whom is wanted and loved and can be supported who will have a family to be there for them. My God who is going to be there for these little people? Their mother is a nut and their Grandmother is bad mouthing her only child, their mother !!! God help them all.

I cant understand how this woman that is single and without a job or a stable home environment to have 14 children. And many woman out there who would love to have 1 to adopt and the process you have to go through and many time after going through that tedious process one is not gurantee that you will get a child.I want to know if it is really easier or this is what God want for human to have 8 chidren or that was only for certain animal? What we dont have a mind to think . Or what we think with our fingers and aferward we try to act. What is she looking for fame or she cannot satisfied? Look at the state of the economy we cant evn feed who we have and having 14 more added, what kind of future are we looking forward to? It alway amazes me that whenever things like these or someone kills onother we play the blame game and find people to cover our dark shaddow ,by saying we have mental issues that is a lie and is fully time we as a people see that those arguement have no worth and dont waste tax payers money on these peple. When are we going to come to our senses when the nation crumble? We all have a story ,just to let us look good for the moment. This woman have her plan to get interviewed and sell her story we all know about her story so she dont need to sell it she too bad.I am so sorry for those children and pray God will protect them and help the mother eyes to be open to the problems ahead. I do hope she will nuture thses children in the right way but how can she do that and shre needs nuturing herself. i really need some answers, i wnt a child too and do you suggest that i do that same process and dont have a job a husband and a home is that fair for an innocent child that did not ask to be here. ponder these things

The doctor who implanted a single women with 6 kids already with even 1 let alone 7 embryos should be shot, better yet, I say that idiot doctor should have to support them all, but NO it will be MY tax dollars in CA that will raise those kids, IDIOTS!

i can't believe there was a doctor out there that put all these babies at risk for the sake of his own wallet!! I work in Neonatology and find this disgusting that they would A: give her invitro even after already having 6, and B: wouldn't reduce the pregnancy to make things safer for her and for the babies. Very Angering!!!
