OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 13 — The nation’s largest organization of registered nurses tonight activated its nationwide disaster relief program to recruit nurse volunteers to provide assistance to residents of earthquake devastated Haiti, the National Nurses United announced Tuesday night.

You can give a one-time $10 donation to the Red Cross for the destruction in Haiti by texting “HAITI” to 90999, which will come out of your phone bill.

Registered Nurse Response Network sent more than hundreds of nurse volunteers to the Gulf region following Hurricane Katrina. RNRN has also sent volunteers to Sri Lanka after the South Asia tsunami and to help following huge Southern California wildfires. RNRN is affiliated with National Nurses United, AFL-CIO, the national union and professional association for Registered Nurses.

Details are still being worked out, but nurses can sign up at the NNU website

NNU will also provide follow up information on their Twitter account for details and plans.

The 150,000-member NNU was formed last month through the unification of California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, United American Nurses, and Massachusetts Nurses Association.

Through RNRN, the organization hopes to send nurses to provide emergency short term and long term medical support, as it has in previous major disasters. Following Katrina, for example, RNRN volunteers worked with local healthcare and emergency agencies and officials in mobile clinics, area hospitals, and other healthcare settings in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas.

“We are calling on nurses throughout the U.S. to join us in this critical effort,” said NNU Executive Director Rose Ann DeMoro.

“Nurses will be fundamental to the disaster relief process, to provide immediate healing and therapeutic support to the patients and families facing the devastation from this tragic earthquake,” DeMoro said.

A plane with docs from New York who returned after performing hundreds of surgeries in 72 hrs. They left because the truck that was arriving to bring medical supplies was hijacked by thugs. These surgeons left because they did not have supplies because thugs stole them at gunpoint. How many deaths did this cause? I know a handful of surgeons can only do so much, but they would have finally slept in shifts as long as they had supplies, the theft of the supplies gave death warrants to how many gangrene patients. On Sunday they were doing amputations faster than they could roll them in. Maybe its to the point that they need to shoot looters on site due to the possible harm to the people harmed in the earthquake.

Yes in a situation like this the violence will soon begin - people are starving and desperate, and the thugs have always controlled the country there....

I believe we are anticipating this, as my son just got notice he and other federal law enforcement agents are going there, probably next week. Someone has to protect the rescuers. BTW when his agency sent help to aid the Katrina victims, their helicopter returned with bullet holes in it.

Where there is tragedy, there will always be people who will take advantage of the victims. I hope the supplies we are sending really get to the people - not stolen and sold for profit.

Sorry, if the word UNION wasnt mentioned, Id be on the boat as soon as possible. However, unions have purchased our President, Congress and the Senate for votes so rock on and good luck. They dont have unions in Grorgia.. I use to fuss about it but now Im happy to stay we are UNION free and happy I dont have to bribe anybody for anything. I wonder if anybody else has a distrust for unions. I know many folk here are in Unions and sold their souls to unions, but there is so much not everybody in this country have access to, aka unions...........and were doing just fine. Personally I would not give a plug nickel for anything President Obama wants to send our money for. He's already punishing my husband and others like us because we have those gosh awful cadillac health care insurance plans............disregard the fact that we had goals we worked for but we prefer not to have to rely on handouts. Our charitable contributions will remain the same, with the excepttion for a donation for our special med school niece going to Aftrica. Sorry, Obama............your taking too much of out money for us to give more gangsters stealing from the poor folk who need it. We did buy baby formula and diapers to send with our church for a large package as a community package they cant be trusted with money. The United States is the most giving country in the world, and Obama spent most of his first year apologizing for how horrible we are............and his wife said "we are downright mean". My neice in med school is taking spring break off to go to Africa to assist with a huge Aides community. How can we trust that our assistance will go to these poor people instead of their corrupupt govt. I do feel bad for the people and pray for them, they need a massive rebellion before they finish digging out the rest of the government workers.........maybe kick a bit more dirt on. How can anybody with a lick of sense trust the money will go to the people? We have US and UN soldiers helping now, but thugs will steal the food and water and within a few days there wil be violence. I did see Sec. Clinton say she would monitor the funds...............but if her husband couldnt, I have have a hard time trusting her with it too, though I know she'd do better.
