I'm wondering is it possible to go to school to be an RN with four children at home? I know people have done this with family obligation, I'd like to hear from you. I desperately want to apply for this fall (2008).

Be bold and take the first step. A journey of a million miles always need the first step. Sometimes our situation in life ae seen as barriers instead of opportunities. View your four children as opportunities, be their example. Maybe one of them will need you as a means of encouragement sometime in their life. They can say with courage and pride that my mom did it with four of us so I can do it. So go ahead, believe, have faith in your self and your dreams and just take one semester at a time. Before you know it you will be walking down the isle to receive your degree. Don't let anyone, or anything, or any negative thought stand in the way of what you can become. All the best to you "NURSE TO BE BOLDEN! YOU ROCK!

It is totally possible. I just finished my bachelors degree while working full-time and going to school part-time. I too have 4 children. The road to this success was hell but if you are devoted enough anythng is possible.

I am starting school to be an RN with 2 kids at home. I'm a full time student with 2 kids, and 2 part time jobs, but I besically started thinking like nurz4life is talking. Other people have done it with much harder circumstances, and I am a strong woman, so why not? Sure, it will be really hard, but if I take it one day, one week at a time, I can make it! I started looking into schools and degree options in october, and before I knew it I had received a Pell Grant and enrolled and I'm about to start school! In fact, I start school on Monday and I'm sooooooooo nervous! lol So just decide to take life by the horns and make a better life for you and your children, because that's what I am doing, and my family is so proud of me for it. My 6 year old daughter said, "Mama, you can use some of my Princess pencils for school if you want. You are gonna do so good, you are so smart!" And that just confirmed it all for me, that I am headed in the right direction. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the encouragement. I'm getting really excited and just moving forward without thinking about it too much or I'm afraid end up putting it off one more year. Michigangirl0522 my children are excited also and that makes me more determined. Keep a princess pencil with you at all times and that can be a small reminder of why your doing this and that you can make it.

When I was working on my Bachelor's Degree in Busin Admin, I also worked full-time with 2 kids at home. It is very important that you have at least one other person who supports your going to school. He/she/they would need to be involved in helping to care for your kids while you do your thing. My youngest child learned the word 'homework' before turning age 2. That's because he would ask me to play with him and then my response would be, 'not right now, I'm doing homework.' He's 4 now. He will be familiar with mommy doing homework once again. I sorta feel bad but I know that nursing is what I really want to do and the pay will be better to help support the family. Good luck to you.

Hi, I just wanted to say that I am 48 yrs old and just recently started back to school. I have been working on my prereq's for CNA to RN program. I hope to start nursing school next spring. Yes, it is hard to balance school, home, work, etc but with preseverence it CAN be done. ....Just take one day at a time.....thats what im trying to do. I work full time in a hospital, and have a business that i work full time, and this semester i am taking 10 credit hrs. I am totally swamped, but knowing that it wont be forever helps to keep me going......if only I didnt have homework!!! lol

A big Hello! I can say this... just Go for it. Nothing can stop you if your mind and your goals are working in synch. Take one step and each day as it comes. Have no worries. Only assume that the best will be found and work towards what you see as your personal achievements and they will come to you. The universe provides when we accept reality and work towards who we truly are inside of it. That's a plan that's worked for me so far. In 15 months i'll graduate with my LPN after 18 years as a CNA ( also working various other jobs along the way), raised one healthy, happy son who is heading off to college himself in the fall and another who is 7 and in 2nd grade. It may have taken me longer than most, but slowly in a long life my dreams are coming true one at a time. How we best find them. Roll with it and Good Luck to All!!!

1997I really commend each and everyone of you. I will be starting Henry Ford community college on monday to complete my prerequisites to enter the nursing program. I too have 5 children ages ranging from 15 to 5. I have struggled trying to make a good honest living all of their lives, however many set backs has stood in the way of me completing this task, like my illness, I have lupus. I was diagnosed with this disease in 1997, however my dream and desire and spirit was never broken. When I felt better I would enroll again and start where I left off. I know this will be a challenge, but I up for it. Looking at each one of them makes the load a little lighter because I know that I can do it and I will do it!! I will take the NET next month. I am a little nervous about it but on the other hand I have all the confidence in the world. I know that this is my calling. The Best of luck to you all, stay strong.

I will take the nursing entrance test in february. Do any of you have any test taking strategies. Is it hard, what should I expect?

Meeting the obligations of nursing school, job, and family can be difficult, but it is not impossible. The key is to have your family on board. They must understand and accept that your time will be limited, and they will not see much of you. They must be willing to help you with chores around the house, and to help take care of each other. The family will sacrifice with you, but they will also share in the joy of your graduation when you fiinish. Schools often cite the contributions of family duirng pinning ceremonies.

Plan ahead. Have a family meeting. Create schedules. Include family time in that schedule, and make them feel a part of your educational processes. The reward is the upscaling of your quality of life after you get your license.

Re Entrance Exams. Different schools have different requirements and may use different tests as part of their admission process. My school, for example, uses the TEAS test (Test of Essential Academic Skills ) produced by ATI (a private testing company). Appliants must score a composite score of 70 to even be considered. After that, it's a matter of getting enough ranking points. We admit students based on the total number of ranking points they earn based on their grades, health care related work history, and health care related educations (CNA, medical assistant, EMT, etc) Other schools have no entrance exam, but require personal interviews with faculty. Some schools have waiting lists, others do not (mine doesn't). The difficulty leve of an entrance exam will depend entirely on the exam used. See if there is a study guide available for yours. If you don't like your score, see if you are allowed to retest to try and improve it.

I went back to school at the age of 41, as did my mother before me. That was three years ago -- I've completed all my prereqs and started the nursing program this past fall. I have three boys, ages 17, 15, and 9, and a wonderfully supportive husband. I also work two part-time jobs. Yes, it's brutally busy sometimes, but my guys are all my biggest cheerleaders. Getting them to pick up socks off the floor can be challenging, but there are times when you just have to let go of the small stuff. Thought I'd die at the end of last quarter -- we had six finals in three days -- but I made it AND made the Dean's List!

It can be done. What's worked for me? "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philipians 3:14

More power to you!~

I also am returning to school pusuant MSN and FNP concurrently. The truth of the matter is, a very small percentage of prople find themselves in the perfect position to return to school (i.e. finances, time, etc..). The rest of us need to realize that the only way to get where we want to be is the hard way.... Difficulty being a part of the reality of self-actualization. I can offer this: - Talk with your family - Make time for your family, and don't take it away from them for any reason - Gain their understanding of the benefit of your decision, monetary or otherwise - commit your self to the course of study - make time to study and don't take it away from yourself for any reason - remember, when dealing with your fellow nurse, that they too are feeling the pressures of daily life while trying to accomplish their professional / personal goals. We can all help each other become a more effective part of a vital profession if we care enough to invest our time.

I am one semester away from graduation! May cannot come soon enough. I would jump in with both feet and pursue your dream! It is tough but if you want it bad enough DO IT! Just make sure you tell your spouse to have a kids night out before a test so you can get some study time in. If you are a neat person know that your house is going to be a mess while you are in class. I have had to let that part of me chill. Christmas break or summer break is when I clean again! And dust bunnies will become your friend. Tell them that laundry will have to be a team sport or no one will have clean underwear!
My step-son actually started studying with me. He even knows the meaning of COLDSPA! His grades have gone way up since I started school.
DO IT ! DON'T BE AFRAID! It will all work out in the end! Best of luck to ya!!!!!

Anything is possible if you put your mind to it.........I strongly believe in positive thinking......go at things with a positive attitude....If you believe you will fail at something you probably are going to fail.........Be positive:)

I am a single mom of 2 and its very challenging trying to incorporate school, work, and time for your family, but with patients, and taking things one day at a time its managable. You just have to prioritize and have support from your family and friends. You can do it! Thats what I tell myself everyday and I know if I dont try how would have I known if I would have been successful or not. Good Luck!
