After doing some homework about the incentives and monetary sign on bonuses offered to new hire nurses, I had a talk with a nurse who has been in the field and dedicated for 30 years. The story she told broke my heart. According to her she is seeing a lot of fresh graduates come out of college and get these great incentives, and then once the contract is fulfilled they move on to another place and repeat the same thing. I was appalled to think that anyone would have the audacity to do this. The nurses who are currently in the business and have spent most of their life dedicated to their patients should be getting these bonuses. Instead they are replaced with green nurses, asked to train them, and given little encouragement to stay around. So I want to thank all of the nurses who have paved the way, spent countless hours training new nurses and have set forth the guidelines and earned the respect we get with the title of Registered Nurse. The prestige of the nurse has been developed due to these amazing men and women-we should consider our actions/career choices affect on their hard work.
