First of all, i am new to this forum so hello everyone!!^_^. My name is Shanice Jones and I am a student from the Bahamas.I kno my profile says i'm form new york and i will be in a few years. Well, here's my problem. I've just recently graduated from highschool in june. I am 17 and i am waiting untill i am 18 to go to college .I will be starting in the spring. I really wanted to go to a U.S colege but my parents don't want me to go.I've finally got them to agree to let me go to college here in the Bahamas for 2 years and then the U.S for another 2 years. Will my Bahamian associates degree be legitamate in the U.S?I plan to work and live in the U.S as a registered nurse (my specialty has not been decided yet) and i want to know if what i am doing is right.

HI Shanice,

I would recommend you contact the International Council of Nurses for guidance and assistance.  Their website is

Your transfer requirements will be different depending on the college you choose.  You probably have a better opportunity at a private university program.  You should contact the universities directly to find out what will transfer and what their prerequiste requirements are.  Right now Newly Graduated RNs are having a difficult time getting jobs with the economy and changes in health care reimbursement.  I don't know what is involved as far as getting a Visa to work in the US involves at this point as only so many are granted / year.

In addition, you should contact the New York Board of Nursing for specific information on requirements for licensing.
