Poll: How do you feel about congress rejecting unemployment extensions?

I'm curious to know if anyone on NL has been personally affected by Congress's decision to not extend unemployment benefits.  My family has been personally affected by this, and I know of several others who have been financially devastated by it.  I would like to add that I'm also aware there were many who were "riding the wave" of unemployment in an effort to avoid work, but for many others this was not the case.  There are some very hard working Americans out there who have been hit hard by unemployment and are finding it nearly impossible to support their families.

Out of curiousity, does anyone feel as though this type of decision leads to higher crime rates?  For instance, theft, sale of narcotics, fraud, possibly even murder or suicide?  I have a feeeling we could see these things go on the rise when people begin to feel desperate.

Once again, this is in the anonymous zone because it could become political and I would like members to feel safe to speak freely and honestly.

As they say all good things must come to an end. I have no, zip, zero, nada, sympathy for those that have collected unemployment for months or even years and now they are cut off. In a previous life I was laid off 3 times in 5 years when the places I worked all went belly up. I got 6 months unemployment each time and that was it. It sucked bad but it was reality and I took whatever job I could find .Now people are crying because they are out of benefits after 99 weeks on the dole. Tough luck, get off your arse and take a job at McDonalds if you have to to get some money rolling in.There is NO FREE MONEY it all comes form the taxpayer  so its a shame that it happens but thats life. Oh and by the way the woman that lives across the street from me worked for GE for 1 year and she is now on her 2nd or 3rd extension, I forget which, where she is collecting the max here in Pa of 539.00/week PLUS an additional 175.00/week from a special GE fund so her take home is what over 700/week clear. Like I said in another post what would be your motivation to EVER go out there and find another job when you have that kind of "free" money coming in?

The long term unemployment benefits just keep people from looking for a job until it runs out. I was laid off one time in my life. I applied for unemployment but I also looked for work. I found a job before the first payment. Personally I think unemployment benefits should be for 3 months only with no extensions. This would give a person enough time to really look for work.

As for will it increase crime? I am not so sure it has that much effect on crime. Poeple commit crimes because they are lazy. It is a quick and easy way to make money. People who are intelligent, ethical and moral will not commit crimes no matter what their situation. The people who commit crimes will do it no matter what.
