Hi Mili,

Nursing like any profession will be a time demander. Of course any schooling you go through your going to have to spend a lot of time with your studies. But if becoming a RN is something you desire then go for it.

As for being a RN in the professional work world you have to realize that there are many different places RN's can work; physicians offices, hospitals, assisted care facilities, immediate care clinics, so on and so fourth. But of course as a new RN you will have to pay your dues before you can get the "ideal" position. For example like you I am married to a wonderful woman and have my son who is 2 almost 3. Beinging I am unemployed this summer I have been watching my son during the days and spending my evenings taking online and even classes working on my prerequisites to get into the nursing program. Once in I know the nursing program is a day time program. But once I am finished my wife and I have both resigned to the fact that I will be looking for the night shift of 7pm to 7am work. The plus with that is if I can get a fulltime position it's 3 days a week. If I can only get a per diem position then I would probably have to take two of them at different hospitals and thus end up working 4 days a week. But again we are planning for it and know that there will be some adjustments to our lives but still lots of time to have with my family.

Good luck on your adventure and that is absolutely great that you have support from your family to do it!

I am in nursing school right now and I have three kids. My husband is about to leave for Saudi Arabia for a year. Nursing school takes up A LOT of time. The best thing to do is balance your studying with things your kids can do. I invested in a box of industrial grade earplugs (from Amazon) so I can study anywhere.

I find all the places that have wifi or places the kids can play and have fun, without me having to chase them. Incredible Pizza, Chucky Cheese, McDonalds play place, the park, bookstore, library, etc. It has to be incorporated or you will feel guilty you are spending time away, and they are resentful. You have to put school and studying first- only for a little bit.

A understanding and supportive family is so important. Divorce rate is higher among nursing students. It is hard but worth it. I have one semester left!

As far as for a social life- the best social life is with study buddies that know what you are going through. You do need to force yourself to take time away from study to rest the brain and get reenergized!
