Good jobs while in nursing school?

Posted almost 3 years ago I know some people have worked full time jobs or have already were/are CNA/LPN while going to school to get their RN but what really are good jobs while you are in school? As soon as the summer term finishes up next week I'll be taking the class to get my BLS and then have been looking at positions like patient transport and some of the assistant positions that don't require any experience. Any suggestions? |

| Posted almost 3 years ago Hey Pete, what's up! I just finished my first semester of nursing school. I think having ANY job while in school is challenging, but since we are adults with responsibilities- it's not always possible to forego working to go to school. That being said, here's what I did: I took a part-time job at the hospital where I work as a Unit Clerk at night. The hospital units seem to understand and welcome nursing students (and the nurses show you a lot of cool stuff). Also, I am going to be a Patient Care Tech during this summer while school is out. You can probably get any type of job in a hospital where the understanding is that you are a nursing student first and foremost. The object is to have your work revolve around your school instead of school revolve around your work. You will be able to manage your time better for studies. It worked for me (I got an A in Fundamentals). You will definitely find something suitable, because whoever you interview with will know you are on the ball because you have a great goal. Good luck! |

| Posted almost 3 years ago Sounds like I have the right idea then. We have several hospitals in our area and most of them work with the college for the internships from the nusring and the other medical programs the school has. So hopefully that will go to help. |

| Posted almost 3 years ago You know what? I just remembered this, so I will share it with you... I paid for the BLS for Healthcare providers (took it with the Red Cross) becuz it's required for school. Then I went to work & found that I could have taken the class for free based on being employed by the hospital. If I had known better, I would have saved $75. Might be worth looking into... |

| Posted almost 3 years ago Yeah I have checked into it and since I am not an employee of any hospital I don't get that perk. However every job listing that I have seen lists that you need your BLS to "apply" for the position, sooo that's my next step. Right now I am just finishing up the last week of summer term classes and then will go get the training done. |

| Posted almost 3 years ago How many hours did you work as a unit clerk pblack2107? Did you work during the days you went to school? I'm kind of in the same situation, however, I'm not sure whether or not I should keep my job. I'll be taking Fundamentals of Nursing (only) in the Fall. |

| Posted almost 3 years ago Dbdestiny: I am still working as a Unit Clerk. Today, i also finished up an orientation for a Patient Care Tech position at another hospital to get clinical experience. So this Fall, I will have two part-time hospital jobs (Unit Clerk and PCT) and three classes- Labor & Delivery, Med Surg and Human Growth and Development. Needless to say, if you haven't already figured it out, I won't have much of a life after August 31. I will be off on Sundays (no work no school) and on Tuesdays, school from 9 am to 9 pm. After December 2011, I will be done with nursing school and ready to get a life. I am sure some of the nursing students on these boards will agree that there is no life til after NCLEX... |

Just remember, the only dumb question is the one not asked!!!! |
