Posted about 5 years ago Hi I too have thought about the practicality of a pda vs "lugging" around a big drug dictionary. I have also seen a few RN and NP's use them and am curious as to which ones and what software would be the best for the best price.

Posted about 5 years ago I purchased a PDA off ebay. It was already loaded with a lot of nursing programs. It has nursing diagnoses, which is wonderful for clinical! The program I probably use the most is the drug guide. I REALLY LOVE mine. I can keep it in my pocket. It's great because where we do our clinicals we aren't allowed to bring our books. All we can bring is a coat that we have to put on a coat rack 2 floors down! Wish they would give us a room to put our stuff in. Stacie

Posted almost 5 years ago While I was in nursing school we had one clinical group "test" the PDA's effectiveness in clincal. We were given a basic PDA and were given a list of programs that we had to buy for it. We used Davis's Drug Guide for Nurses and Davis's Domprehensive Handbook of Laboratory and Diagnostic Tests. Both were very helpful since we didn't have to carry a drug book around anymore, you can download updates for the drug guide online for up to a year. Skyscape online has alot of programs for nurses for their PDA's. I personally love my PDA.

Posted almost 5 years ago I just started my 2nd year in nursing school and have had PDA the whole time. I love it. One of our instructors recommended Nursing Central.com and that's what I have. For $150.00 you get Taber's, Davis's Drug Guide, Davis's Lab & Diag tests, Diseases & Disorders, and MEDLINE journals. In seconds I can pull up a drug and have all the Actions, Indications, Interactions, S/E, A/E, Dosage, teaching, etc. If I'm reviewing a chart and don't understand a term, I have it right there in the Taber's. I hope it will be as useful when I'm an RN. Probably in the beginning of the learning curve it will be good and then taper off as I gain experience. Hope this helps

Posted almost 5 years ago There are many brands of PDA's (just like computers). In fact it is just a small computer. Mine is a Treo 650 that I bought off of Ebay for about $150 and is also my phone (smart phone). You can get a PDA or smartphone with two different OS (operating systems): Palm OS or Microsoft. Palm OS has a lot more programs available since it has been around longer for the PDA's. Just remember, it's just a small computer. It will only do what you program it to do (meaning what ever application you install). Good luck

Posted over 4 years ago I specifically upgraded my cell phone to a palm so that i could buy nursing central for it, but I haven't bought the program yet. When you are using this program are you considered online on your phone? I don't have unlimited access for this and don't want to be surprised with an outrageous phone bill.

Posted over 4 years ago would it be cheaper if we just used a pda cell phone "Dreams come true; without that possibility, nature would not incite us to have them." - John Updike

Posted over 4 years ago I have the PalmPilot TX. Never leave home without it! Just for the calendar and contacts it would be worth the money, but add a drug guide, med calculator, and lab interpretation software makes this item ideal for nurses.

Posted over 4 years ago I use a Tungsten for the office part of the job & keeping kids activities / home life scheduled. Lock it up in my drawer when I'm working in the unit. Haven't seen but one or two nurses using one in our dept. We're kinda partial to our field guides.

Posted about 4 years ago I use my Palm Treo 650 and have dropped it several times with no problems. It's over two years old now too. I use Epocrates and live on it at work. My patients think that it's pretty cool and the doc that I work with calls it my "inspector gadget tool". www.arnp.blogspot.com www.npplace.com

Posted about 4 years ago I had a pda (sony clie) during LVN school.... loved it! carried taber's, davis's, labs 360, Rn FastFacts, etc, etc in a small package... everything at your fingertips.... Decided it was a waste to carry cel and pda, got an HTC-8900 (ATT) Tilt smart phone two years ago... great investment.... MANY different smart phones out there... will do everything for you... make a list of what you want it to do, then look for products that will satisfy your need... Personally, I don't carry many pictures, videos, large PowerPoint files, don't need a camera or an MP3 player etc.... would look at a low end Iphone now if I had to choose Found all the programs I needed at Skyscape.com they also have pretty good support.

Posted about 4 years ago I have a Palm Tungsten E2 and use it all the time in clinicals. I have an epocrates trial version + Davis Drug Guide and Mosby's labs and the coolest thing of all, an ABG calculator. Punch in the values and it gives you the answer. Back in school I used a palm and found a CD on ebay that had a ton of programs, all specialties. After moving back and forth, I am not sure where that CD is; but, if I find it I will burn you a copy. If you want to increase the odds I do find it, mention it to St. Anthony. In the meantime, take a look at this one on ebay right now http://cgi.ebay.com/Look-Students-26-Nursing-Medical-Software-for-Palm-OS_W0QQitemZ280346620190QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPDA_s_Pocket_PC_s?hash=item4145f5f11e&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1462%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

Posted over 3 years ago I was using an iPhone but just changed to a Palm Pre... Lots of medical apps for both.. but i prefer the option of downloading from sites other than iTunes.. I will keep the iPhone and use it as an iPod and camera. Man will not be free until the last lawyer is strangled with the entrails of the last priest. With apologies to Voltaire

| Posted over 3 years ago Many of the new phones can double as the pilot function so don't go buying a dedicated palm. There is a lot of freeware for Medicine on the web and Epocrates has a free 90 days trial of its full version that is great as well.
Cheers and good luck - Tim, R.N. |
