Posted almost 3 years ago Ok I am mainly targeting RN's who work in hospitals. I know, at least at the hospital my works at, that if you are a fulltime RN you work three 12 hour shifts a week. With that it leaves me to wonder what do you do with the other 4 days a week off? Do you pick up another per diem nursing position? Do you have major hobbies that take up time?
I really ask this questions because it has rolled around in my head ever since I started considering a career in the medical field. Sure I understand there is some rest time involved after working your bum off for those three days but still seems like a lot of free time. |

| Posted almost 3 years ago I worked as a floor nurse for a couple of years and it was nice to work my 3 then off 4, of course I also had my own massage therapy practice so that allowed me time for my business. The past two years I have worked in the specialty of Acute hemodialysis and let me tell you if you want to stay busy then this may be the specialty for you. I work 4 days a week 12-16 hours a day and I take call 3 days a week and rotating every 3rd weekend......I have very little down time. I love it but sometimes I think, boy I should go back to floor nursing. However, I remember feeling more stressed doing that so the extra time off was needed. Just some food for thought. |

| Posted almost 3 years ago Do you think possibly you felt more stressed as a floor nurse cause you weren't as seasoned of a nurse as you are now? |

| Posted almost 3 years ago Hi Pete, It is possible, however the patient load (8-10) and accuity is extremely high. I believe that even as a seasoned acute care nurse I would still be more stressed working a floor. I would definitely need the extra down time to unwind! I could do the job but prefer to stick with acute care, especially hemodialysis. I work crazy hours but I also have the opportunity to be with my patients and build relationships, which is important to me. |
