online degree frowned upon ?

Posted almost 3 years ago Has anyone experienced or heard of any negatives regarding completing a BSN online?? I'm not referring to being capable of staying on track or being motivated or being on top of your studies - but rather the quality of education or how you are viewed as an online student... For example, prior to applying to NYU, I need to complete a few pre-reqs. However, NYU has told me to stay away from online classes (bc they are look down upon). The advisor told me that if I really need to take a class online, then it should only be the nutrition or psych course - but all other science pre-reqs should be completed in a classroom setting. Has anyone else experienced this?? |

| Posted almost 3 years ago I can't say that I have heard one way or another about that. I would think it depends more on the university or college that you obtain your degree from. My wife works in the recruiting department at a local hospital and when they are looking at potential candidates they look more at the facilities rather than weather you took classes online or in the classroom. We are moving to a day and age where more and more schools are offering online educations due to the technology to provide more education to more people abroad. I know like UCF (University of Central Florida) offers a MSN program for leadership and management that is completely online. UCF is considered a good school here in Florida and hospitals and other medical facilities would not look down upon a person obtaining their degree through that route. Most online programs still require students to do clinicals at a hospital and thus you are still having to get hands on practice. Where I would frown is if "lab" classes are online as that is something in my opinion should always be taught in a classroom but lecture classes should be just as workable online as they are in the classroom. From my own experience, which I am still taking prerequisites, I have taken most of my classes in the classroom but have a handful of classes I have completed online. In many ways I think the online classes are more of a challenge because it is almost completely a self study program whereas in the classroom you meet others like you and form study groups and work together to learn which is also team building and networking. So any ways I hope this helps. |

| Posted almost 3 years ago I just started classes for my BSN online. I'm having no problems. The school is great and very professional. I know many people who have gotten their BSN online. It isn't looked down upon, in my opinion. I know a lot of people who have done online school and not just for nursing. My dad got his Associates and BS online. When you work a lot its pretty hard to get into the classroom so online school is easier and more flexible in my opinion. I'd recommend it to anyone. It's not as easy as many people may think.

| Posted almost 3 years ago I think online courses just like classroom courses vary in difficulty. For instance I took Art Appreciation online and that was an easy class but I took an Anatomy & Physiology class online and that was a challenge. |

| Posted almost 3 years ago Thank you both for the replies. I have taken many online courses in the past, so I certainly agree with you when you say they tend to be more difficult than a traditional (in-class) course. Often times, I felt like I was getting more readings and assignments simply because it was online! Unfortunately, I missed the fall application deadline for the schools in NY so I had to apply for spring semester - in the meantime, however, I would really like to take an online course so I can begin working on my pre-reqs. If anyone has any recommendations for a good online program where I can take 1 or 2 courses, that would be appreciated! Thanks again for the insight! |

| Posted almost 3 years ago Have you checked your local community college to see if they have online classes that you can take? |

Take the advise of the NYU representative. The advise was not on your degree completion but on the pre-requisite courses. The reason why you were told not to take your Science courses online was for the lab pre-requisites a lot of online schools don't offer labs. There is a community college in upstate NY that offers the lab online, but you have to build your own incubator and grow your own microbes in your house. I think it was Cortland Community College. Good luck. |

| Posted almost 3 years ago Thanks Buscandocurandera - that makes perfect sense. Looks like I'll just need to sit tight and wait for Spring semester to come around before I take any courses. thanks everyone!

| Posted almost 3 years ago I don't necessarily think anyone would frown upon where you received your degree, but I will say that I find face to face classes far more engaging, if you have the time. There are more opportunities to ask questions, get answers immediately, and make bonds with other students. ~ Laugh as much as you breath and love as long as you live ~ |
