Good Evening to you all.

I was asked awhile back to start a petetion, to sumit to the Registerd Nursing board, a proposal to grandfather Lvn's into Rn postions to help eleveate the nursing shortage. To allow them to sit the Rn boards if they have meet the criteria. Just like the Cns are challenging the Lvn board. Critria must be meet, but we are out here. With the economy as bad as it is, The cost of just a conventional college is outragious. I am currently enrolled in 14 units this fall, striving for the dream. But I think I can do more. Can you help me?

Please read my post on the issue if your interested. I really think its time us nurses pull together, after all we are excepted to work as a team on the floors, in the Emergency room, and any where else team nursing is their approach. Lets be a team out here. Let our voices be heard. Theirs are alot of very competent Lvn out their doing just as good a job as Rn's. but we get no reconiitation.

If fact some hospitals are trying to phase Lvns out. So I will research anything and everything to get the signatures to the board and have our voice be heard. Are there any Lvn's out there willing to fight for this? If I don't at least try I will never know if I could have helped with our nations growing problems of many patients and not enough nurses to care for them. Take some of the load off our Rn.s as well. Ready Set Go..........

I think it is courageous of you to launch an effort like this for something you believe in.

I would like to suggest that petitioning for more bridge programs to accelorate the transition to RN from LVN is a safe option.  I have seventeen years experience as an L.V.N and have taught many RNs fresh out of school how to do basic nursing skills proceedures, however they in turn have been responsible for other important decisions that I am not yet trained and skilled enough to make. I want to be sure that when I carry the responsibiity of being an RN that I do so in good faith and with integrity. I know that being a registered nurse is more than a title. I am sure that many of us could pass the RN board exam if we studied enough, but would that really mean we are prepared for the duties at hand.?

I carry much responsibility now as an L.V.N.,  however ultimately I am responsible for reporting to an RN or MD for advice and guidance and orders.

Perhaps one day  there will be no more L.V.N program only RN programs. That would solve the problem straight away....The public is expecting excellence from all places of business, especially from health care personell. The education requirements for a successful career are constantly on the rise.

Heck, who knows what will be required in the future....all Ph.Ds    lol

Best wishes,

Kathy

This is a good idea!

I'll offer a couple of suggestions, as a  retired State Department of Health attorney and political appointee:

1. Your signatures should be from people who are residents of your State (looks like California?). Those will carry the greatest influence with the Board and Legislature. Include addresses if possible.

2. The Board does the regulation, but your State Legislature actually passes the legislation. Try to make some calls and get your State Representative(s) interested - Present reasons why this will benefit your State's population. Having someone "On your side" in the Legislature will go a long way in getting legislation introduced. A personal contact on the Board will help too. Try to make an appointment to see them in person.

Legislators love to push issues that look good and get them re-elected. Convince your contact that this change will benefit public health in many ways. Let's put it this way: To a politician, a proposed law making 250,000 nurses happy is not as good as making 39,000,000 California residents (voters) happy!

The Board will be asked for advice and will work out the details (regulatory issues) but the Legislature must first be convinced to pass a law.
