Hello, I am new to this website and I am looking for some guidance and encouragement!

I hope I am posting this in the right area, if not, I apologize!

I just began the ADN program this week and I am already so overwhelmed! I feel like I can't keep up!  I finished all of my prereq's (coreq's) except microbiology before applying, so I only have the "NUR" classes.

I have a great husband and 4 daughters ages 5, 6, almost 10, and 15. I already feel soooo guilty for the time I will not be spending with them!

Honestly, I have broken down and cried every night this week, and I am trying not to regret my decision to do this!  I am on edge all of the time, and my stomach constantly hurts and I have trouble taking a deep breath!

I need to know that it settles in and gets better!  Any tips, advice, words of wonder? I just won't make it if I feel this way all the time!!

Please help me!

Wow, I just read this over and I really do sound like I am losing it! Sorry, I swear I am not normally a basketcase! I am the one that helps my friends when they feel like this! Grrrr! Help!

Heya! First of all congrats on taking the steps to become a nurse.

Slow down for a moment and let your thoughts collect. Nursing school is going to be a very big challenge in every fascet of your life weather it's your husband, your children, your time, your sleep, etc it's all going to be affected. Now with that said it's a short time period when you really look at it. Think about your 15 year old and how it just seem like yesterday she was just a baby. This will fly even faster than that did. You are going to be overwhelmed with school work, clinicals, and labratory assignments but you will get through it. The key is to handle one task at a time. Also do set some time aside for your family and yourself. Your not going to have much time but you still need to take a little for your mental well being.

I just recently read a book called "Becoming a Nurse" and the general theme in there from nursing students was the hard work and many hours that the schooling demanded of them but also how they all found great satisfaction when they were serving patients during their clinicals. So remember, it's going to be very hard but you can make it through it!

Thank you, I like the idea of comparing to how fast two years goes by with my kids! I think I am doing better this second week into it...   I really appreciate the encouragement, thanks!

Glad to hear it. It will get better with time. You have to keep that in your head too. The time will go quicker then you know. =)

Congratulations on furthering your education!  I too struggled with guilt for the time spent studying and going to school fulltime often feeling as if I was foresaking my family, however, keep in mind that you are not only doing this for yourself, but for your family as well!  "Basketcase" is a gentler description than what I used to describe myself...but remember that this site is useful in the fact that we can share with one another and realize that our feelings are not at all alien.  It is okay to cry..hugsss to you!

I tell you I had to laugh this morning as I had my second class of the term and I am taking my prerequisites. The professor this morning (MicroBio) is the same one I had yesterday (AP2) and he said I was crazy. I laughed knowing that this is just a precursor to nursing school and that I can get through the classes and do well. Again it is at the cost of time with my family but at the same time it does mean a good future for my family and I once I am done. Anyone in the same boat should know that and remind yourself every time you start to doubt your decision that your doing this to benefit everyone around you and yourself. It's not being selfish. It's doing what's right for you and your family.

I am in the same boat as you are.  We had a math exam that we have to score a 100 percent on and I only got an 80.  I have 2 more chances to take it, so I hope I pass or no more nursing school.  I have waited 7 years to get into the program.  I HAVE to pass!!!

Good luck to  you too.  You CAN do it!!!

A good man loves other. A better man loves God. A great man loves God and lives well among others! I miss you daddy!

I graduated about a year ago. I totally understand how you feel. This crazy time in your life will pass. Nursing school was the hardest thing I have ever done. I felt like a basketcase the whole way through nursing. I am glad to say that it does pass. Nursing school is well worth it. Looking back, it was a crazy time in my life but the two years flew by. Dont give up...Michelle RN :)
