Posted over 2 years ago Hey RN's! I'm pre-nursing, and I've been reading a LOT of stories lately about how nursing is not what it's cracked up to be, how catty the workplace is, how they can't get a job, how much they wished they had gone in a different direction. I know people are more likely to b^&tch than praise, but I want to know, honestly..would you do it again? I would appreciate any input! |

| Posted over 2 years ago " Yes,it's true that Nursing has changed over the years; however, whatever path anyone takes in life, they are always going to find many persons of different character. Some nicer than others, those you can, "honestly, count on for help, when you need it", and then," Those ,Who Make You Question God:" WHY?!" *** Nonetheless, that's why we call it:"LIFE"*** |

| Posted over 2 years ago Nine Lives- I love that quote about 'thats why we call it life...' That made my day......
I am a new nurse myself....and NO i don't regret going into nursing....It's hard for me to accept where I am currently...because IT is the farthest thing from what I want to do...but I guess I gotta start somewhere....sooo, hang in there! |

| Posted over 2 years ago Nursing is hard. You have to have your heart in it or you will hate it. Real life nursing and school nursing are completly different. I love my career, but I do have the days where I am like, "why did I go to school for this." However, I think every person experiences those days in every career.

| Posted over 2 years ago NO way would I ever do it again nor would I ever advise ANYONE else to do it. I dont make enough money < 40K in 2010 and I work full time on an intense cardiac floor as an RN. The lousy hours, the lousy money, nights, holidays, weekends, who needs it. Be a teacher if you want to help people. Now I know what they mean when someone tells me " I could never do your job". Its so crappy who would want to? |

| Posted over 2 years ago There are so many options available to an experienced nurse, I think if you are not happy, its time to find a new area to work in. Nursing is a joy and a very rewarding field. Finding your passion within any field is key. If it's not your passion, it's time to start thinking about solutions for burnout, or alternatives. | Posted over 2 years ago You are right about that. I have never found my passion and I know its not in nursing. Luckily I have an interview coming up that will allow me to still utilize my expensive license and training but will move me away from the bedside. I stand by what I said though: I will never advise anyone to enter this profession. Aim higher as in a PA-C or as a CRNA and thats where I went wrong. You learn all this science , anatomy etc etc and none of it means anything once you are on the floor. The DR's could give a crap about what you know and since you have no real power anyway as a nurse I find myself saying "whats the point" all the time. My slogan is "nurses responsible for everything with control over nothing" and thats the truth...... |

| Posted over 2 years ago I have been away from beside nursing a couple of times. I have been a manager of a cancer center and heart failure department. Loved it. I am at the bedsiide now and have been for 4 years. Getting ready to make some changes myself. I know things have changed since I have been a nurse over 20 years. I certainly know being a nurse is my calling, and I sure would not advise anyone to go into this just to get a good paycheck... Joyce Harrell, RN, OCN
