Posted over 2 years ago I've noticed many nurses who are out of shape on the job. Do you feel that this should be used against new nurses who arent in tip top shape. Should there be a weight requirement for nurses. Do you think that it could affect their work performance due to excess weight? Let me know what you think...... |

| Posted over 2 years ago Yeah....I am vehemently against a weight requirement for nurses or pretty much any job for that matter. I say pretty much any job because there are clearly some professions that require a person to work in a very small space and therefor they would need to be able to fit. Beyond that, by requiring nurses to meet a weight guideline we are treading very close to discrimination issues. I do not feel that a heavy nurse is any less effective than a skinny one. As a matter of fact maybe the skinny nurses have health issues as well that need to be addressed. This could be anything from thyroid issues to aneroxia or bulimia. So, by this, you can see Pandora's Box being opened. Instead of trying to force someone into being who we, or the media thinks they should be, perhaps employers could focus on providing gyms in the work place or discounts to local health clubs. This would be seen as a more positive motivation like GITANO mentioned instead of trying to force someone to change when they can't or aren't ready. Losing weight can be a very difficult task and sometimes impossible if someone has serious health issues or is taking specific medications. I think she would all be a bit more tolerant of those who are different. GITANO, that is a wonderful idea that your facility came up with to positively reinforce a healthy lifestyle! ~ Laugh as much as you breath and love as long as you live ~ |
