I'm a former police officer and currently a firearms instructor... here is my opinion:

In a private facility, tasers are useless - if somene is a bit "out of control" you do not try to subdue them, you simply call the police.

If they are more than out of control and lives are threatened (as in the case cited), deadly force is necessary. If guards are armed they should be armed with firearms and thoroughly trained and requalified yearly on the range.

Remember too that in today's economy, businesses are hesitant to spend money on guards, metal dectectors, etc.

Sound security policies are essential but NOTHING will stop a determined nutcase in most situations.

Wow, I guess after reading Rick's response I have to rethink my position.  There are some things he mentioned that I didn't take into account.  This is a scary situation to think about.

I couldn't agree more!  Being a survivor of domestic abuse and knowing that it makes absolutely NO difference what methods you use (unless it's deadly force or a huge 350# body guard named Bubba) if they're determined to cause harm they will.  After everything I went through I went back and got more firearms training and got my conceal carry permit.  Tasers don't work - I've seen people hit multiple times with them and they just keep getting back up.  And police in many cases can't get there on time - "When seconds count, the police are just minutes away".....

Exactly right - I love the home alarm commercials where the bad guy kicks in the front door, and the alarm guy on the phone tells the woman "Help is on the way!" Right - they'll be just in time to photograph the crime scene.

I struggled with one guy, strung out on PCP and unknown other drugs who it took SIX of us - I'm not kidding - to subdue and restrain. No one had tasers and you can't shoot an unarmed man.

Learn to protect yourself like suthrngrl, and in the workplace figure out a route for quick escape if at all possible, or a secure place to lock yourself (like a janitor's closet with a steel door you can lock from the inside).
