How long have you been at this job? Take those days and subtract them from 365 and that will be about how much longer you have until you are immune to all of those "new" germs. I am totally not joking (much). My 1st year in pediatrics, I was sick as a dog! It gets better. Unfortunately there is not a whole lot you can do other than what you are already doing (hand washing, taking vits). I am sorry and I hope you feel better!

It's funny, I have been working on surgical wards for 11 months NEVER sick ! - and 2 weeks ago started on a medical ward, full of COPD's, infective CAL, bronchitis, and pnumonia patients etc... (and cardiac) but 3 days ago felt like my sinus's filled with concrete and a jackhammer ... arrggh... got a bacterial infection , what a surprise ...NOT. My GP told me she would have been surprised if I didn't get sick starting a rotation there... now I'm on AB's and plan to wash my hands a trillion times a day and be extra vigilant. ugh!!

I began my ER tenure in 1994 and within the first 2 months I was home puking at least 3 different times. Since then, I have been rarely ill. Once you're exposed to damn near everything you'll stop being ill so often. Then once everything mutates...that's a different story.

well i get sick every now and then-- but since my extern started at the family practice and mountain cedar is running rampad here...i have aleaady gotten sick at least 4 times, and i am at home on antibiotics with a severe sinus infection and brinchitis. yup i have only been there for 3 weeks...it seems like we have to build our immunity due to the fact that our bodies are just not used to being exposed to all the illnesses, and when we get sick, we cant go to work cause we could infect others depending on the illness. i wonder- cause i take all necessary precautions to try not to get sick. just like you i wash like a freight train moves...sanitize like crazy much that they are raw and dry at times, and the cold air that alternates so often brings in new allergens that we arent used to. so i guess there isnt much to prevent illness. we just got to uild a tolerence for certain germs, bugs, and viruses i rekkin.

I think you'll get some immunity, don;t worry about it. eat healthy, sleep. I thnk I get sick a lot less than my non-nursing freind sand family. i work in a hsopital and a detox, lots of nasty bugs. I just always figured I get like free vaccines.

I've heard not to eat too much meat/dairy... it might sound hippie, but there's so many antibiotics and growth hormones in those products that it weakens your natural defenses. Plus, dairy products have been known to cause mucus buildup and general sinus problems. I'm not a vegetarian, but it's not a bad idea. I try only to eat meat or dairy when I go out to eat, and feel overall much healthier.

Otherwise, like everyone else said: vitamins, sleep, hand-washing, etc.
