compression stockings, TED hose

Posted over 2 years ago I know compression stockings and ted hose shouild be put on before a resident gets out of bed (I work NOC in a nursing home) and are great for the ones wearing them. My question is, I am being told that I need to have them put on my residents between 5AM and 6AM. The reason that is given is; that after the resident is up their legs are too swolen to get them on. I agree with that. Most hose/stockings should be on while up and taken off when going to bed unless ordered different. My opinion is that the aides should put the stockings/hose on when getting them dressed and ready for the day, not at 5AM. Is it right to wake a resident up to put something on that is uncomfortable, while they are in bed, about 2 hours before they get up? |

| Posted over 2 years ago It is much easier to put these on residents when they are lying down in bed. While it may not be ideal or comfortable, if they are being dressed and gotten up, it makes the most sense to go ahead and put on the TED hose during their a.m. care. When I was an aide, we put the TED hose on the residents we were getting up and then took them off at night when they were getting the residents ready for bed (depending on the physican orders). |

| Posted over 2 years ago that's what I am saying, but our woundcare nurse says that the NOC aides should put them on at 5AM instead of the day aides when they are getting the residents up. I believe this is being said because the day aides are not doing their job. |

Ahhhh..... the typical night shift doesn't do their job/day shift doesn't do their job battle. Or days is busier than nights so nights should have all these other little tasks to do on top of everything else argument..... Dealing with that now myself as a nurse. There is NO reason they should get them on @ 0500 if they are not getting up at that time. Day shift aides could be doing that when they are getting up their assigned residents. I'm sure they're using the excuse they don't have the time to do it because they're so much busier or have breakfast trays to serve or more showers to give, etc. Believe me I've heard all the excuses before and STILL here them. If you're still encountering this stupidity, best bet is to go to your nurse manager and find out what the POLICY is and make sure that is enforced. If you just keep doing the day shift/night shift says this --- you won't ever get it figured out |

| Posted over 2 years ago That is exactly what is going on... Prblem is my unit coordinator agreed with me when she got hired and the day before yesterday threw me under the bus when they called me into the office, only because state is there. The order reads on in the am off at hs...not 5AM. The wound care nurse says it should be on at 5AM. The other problem is that the wound care nurse and the DON are married. I have thought about calling the resident's MD and asking if it is ok to disturb the ir sleep to wake them up. probably get fired for that one. lol |

| Posted over 2 years ago " Aside from the factor of deciding**" whose job is whose",the one question that I have is...... ***When, where and why do Nurses thrive to use the expression;" Throw under a bus"? This not only sounds extreme, but to refer to any medical situation, especially involving a nurse? Is there not a better attempt to explain / resolve a circumstance, than to resort to / refer to, " Urban Tactical Animosity". If we are all adults, can we behave like adults?" |
