Hi everyone, I will be taking my last 2 pre-requisites this spring and will apply to nursing school in September, I get pretty frustrated and find it hard to figure out how to take the classes I need and spend 3 evenings in class and one on Sunday and work a full time job and spend time with my family. I feel guilty! My kids are older and I know that understand but I think it bothers me more, it can make a little hard to get to class everyday. Sometimes I wonder if it is worth it, but nursing is something I always wanted to do and I finally have the support system I need through my husband and kids and I don't want to be a quitter but I know school is not going to get any easier. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dawn I am Robin I can sympathise with you. When I first started nsg school LPN I found out I was pregnant! I had nine mths of school and I had nine mths of pregnancy!!! My teachers were great about supporting me and I made it. Then I decided to go back for my RN by this time I had 2 kids 1 born in 2000 the other in 2001 so they were little when I started the transition program for my RN. Not only that my younger sibiling who had two kids the same age as mine went to jail so I ended up with his two kids unexpectedly and unprepared! In RN school I had 4 toddlers. My husband stayed at home with the children and I worked weekends and went to school through the week. I too felt guilty from time to time but look at the future you will be able to give them. if you stay ahead of schedule as far as school work you will be ok. I always bought my books and sylibus early and began all the homework assignments so by the time school started back I had all my homework done for the semester. I included my kids in my studies and BOY what a difference it made when my kids started school. I did flash cards and lectured to them drew pictures, and labeled them. Even though they might not of understood everything, it was a way to spend time together and still study. Make it a game for you and them. Stick with it because right now yes they need you but when they get older financially they will need you more and the little time it takes you to finish will pay off by giving them a secure future. Dont quit now it is almost over. You and your husband will be ok and include him in your studies too. Believe me I think my husband was the most supportive person in the world in some ways, but not always in the the way I needed make sure you communicate your needs and feelings to him because he will have no idea what you are going through as a nursing student and a mom, so communication is vital. Goodluck to you. If you ever need anything I am here. Something to remember: "DONT SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF" and "Take it as it comes one day at a time".

Dawn- I feel your pain. What keeps me focused is that the schooling will not last forever. I just started my prereq's geared toward the RN Program. Luckily my B.S. Degree took care of some of the classes but I still have 6 semesters of prereqs to go. I stretched out my classes since I, too, work a FT job and have a family). After all my preqreqs are met, it's going to be another 4 semesters (or 16 weeks) in the actual nursing program. Hang in there. I am a bit nervous myself since I may have to quit my 8 to 5 job to accommodate nursing school during the weekdays. I will work double-shifts over the weekend hopefully getting my feet wet as a home health aide if at all possible.

I let my youngest (4 yr old) color or play on his toy laptop while I study so it looks like we're doing homework together. My teenager is pretty much self sufficient at 14. They (including hubby) understand that I have to be away two nights a week to be at school. I guess the poor things got acclimated to it; I finished up classes to get my B.S. Degree one year ago. This is IT. I am going to be a 2nd career nurse and will not look back.

Keep going, you've come this far. Good luck.
