Posted over 5 years ago DDETROLA said: Honey, You already started: you joined this community. Plenty of tips and encouragement. That said: check out what nursing school opportunities are in your area. Do you think you want to start as a CNA? a LPN? or go straight to RN school? Figure out your goal, your motivation and your learning style. For me going to LPN school first was the best fit and for some CNA was the best level for their beginning.

Posted over 5 years ago Like vickielee1970 said you have already taken the first step. I know for me I searched the internet for schools that had accreditation for nursing in my area then I called each of the schools and requested information. I narrowed it down and chose the local technical school that offers and LPN program. Well when I registered I wanted to start in the LPN program but they just changed the selection process for the LPN program and I had to originally start out in the Medical Assistant program but that was just fine with me for the moment because the first quarter classes are the same anyway. But now I have to switch my major and the in between program they have before you are even accepted into the LPN program is a healthcare assistant which is what I believe to be the same as a CNA. So here I am just starting out determined to get all A's in the prerequisites with hopes of being accepted into the LPN program. The upside of this minor setback is that while I am in the process of going for my LPN I will become able to be certified as a CNA, so at least I can get my feet in the door. It is going to be a long road all the way from here to one day RN but it can be done. Okay now that I have gotten off track and told you my life story I will attempt to answer your question. First check out the nursing programs-- make sure they are accredited(sp) then request info, visit the school if possible, apply, get to know your advisor-- pui them on speed dial if necessary, register for your classes, again talk with your advisors regularly to make sure you are on the right road. This will hopefully get you started down the journey to becoming a nurse.

Posted about 5 years ago Also, I have actually learned that around this area, it is better and easier to get your ADN (2-year nursing) and then go back to get your BSN.

Posted almost 5 years ago I think it is easier to start as lpn and then transition into rn. that is what i plan to do. i am starting by taking rn pre reqs which have the few little core courses for lpn. when i get those lpn pre req out of the way, i will apply for program. while i am in the program, i plan to continue little by little to finish the rn courses. by the end of the program i will take the state exam, get a job as a lpn and the school i attend gives u the option to continue on if pre reqs are done. That way i can work a baylor shift (weekend shift) or something until i finish. I chose this route because i am a single parent and i have to work. lpns can make good money working a weekend shift with the added incentives some give. oh! and i can get handson experience for my rn class.
