Can You Believe This???

Posted over 2 years ago Hi guys, It must be a really tough year for me. Here's the story: I am (currently) working as a Patient Care Technician. I have the CNA and the BLS for Healthcare Providers CPR card. I have completed the requisite 2 semesters of nursing school (including clinical hours at hospitals) as well as have an extensive background as an Army trained Pharmacy Technician (including IV, Pyxis and cart fill), unit secretary. I have worked in several acute care hospitals in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area and have other skills earned by virtue of having a Bachelor of Science degree in business. With all that being said, I applied for this job because there are no full time jobs where I am working and this particular hospital can cancel you from service at any time based on their needs (in other words- I don't get paid for a day). Well, I need to work to eat and pay bills. After I applied for this particular position in the same line of work (same title also), this is the answer I got from them: Dear Phyllis: It took them about 10 minutes to reply to the online application. Please y'all--- tell me it's possible and correct to be considered not qualified to do something that I am already doing and getting paid to do at this present time in the year of Our Lord 2010!!!! If you tell me this is OK, then if you tell me a mosquito can pull a plow, I will get him a hitch and take him to a field. |

Posted over 2 years ago Thanks for the encouragement. One day maybe it will happen... The person who wrote the e-mail forgot to block their name, so I did something I have never done before. I wrote them back saying basically that they must have been mistaken, because I am curently working in that position. I summarized my skill set as related to the Patient Care Tech position and asked them to review my resume again. What's the worst that can happen? I'm not really expecting them to reply, but they might be more considerate of others and actually read the resume and tailor it to the person who is submitting the application. It would have even been OK to say that there were "other candidates more qualified, etc, etc."

Posted over 2 years ago You never know! They could reply. Sometimes recruiters use tools that look for keywords, so maybe if you're resume didn't have the keywords the program was looking for, it could have sent you that automated response. Would love to hear if they respond again to see what they say! Crossing my fingers for you! Who knows, maybe they'll find something else you qualify for? Happy holidays!

Posted over 2 years ago Are you a certified Patient Care Technician or just CNA? It may be different where you live, but some places will only hire board certified PCT's vs. CNA's.

Posted over 2 years ago I am a Patient Care Technician who is licensed as CNA. Where I'm from, the CNA license is required to practice as a Patient Care Technician in a hospital. However, there are CNA's who are not Patient Care Techs (examples: work in nursing homes, private duty nursing)

Posted over 2 years ago Must be different where you're from. In our area you aren't a PCT unless you pass the examinations through the Board of Nursing. You can become a CNA in as little as 10 days at some places, but you won't be a PCT unless you take an actual PCT curriculum and test with the BON.

Posted over 2 years ago yeah... it looks like we've got it flipped in the DC Metro. For us, we have to go thru the BON for the CNA and receive a license. Then, we can apply for the PCT jobs. And there is something else- if you complete one semester of nursing school, you can skip the CNA training program. I am sure there is a class for Patient Care Techs in our area, but for the most part, I am hearing that it's on the job training.
