How great does it FEEL to reach a goal. What's the number one problem with goals? Not realizing you need to take that first step. Too many people want to go from 0 to 100 overnight, goal wise. So if your goal is at a 100 level, if you take step #1, and not try to take a step at a level 50 for the first step, you really have a greater change to getting to 100. (whatever that goal is)

When you take small, laughable steps, you bypass the resistance. You FEEL victorious. Who see's themselves already at your goal?

Another thing is to realize your why... WHY are you really setting the goal you are setting? The reason may not be what you think...

I just found out that I was diabetic.  One of my bosses has been on me to change my diet so  I did it.  I went off all starches and sugars.  I eat only meat, fruit and vegetables.  I have stabilized my blood sugar.  I only take my metformin when blood sugars get too high (usually above 140).  I exercise about 30-45 minutes a day on my treadmill.  I am doing this to get healthier and hopefully stay off of insulin in the future..

I went to the gym today. I originally was going to be on the treadmill for 30 minutes. Then I decided I wanted to walk 2 miles. I felt accomplished that I had pushed myself toward the end. I didn't win a prize for the quickest 2 miles. It took me 36 minutes. And I drank all my water today and my vitamins, and ate right, 100% today.

I really want to be an example to other nurses of living a healthy life as an example. I think living in health is the best role model for our patients.

What I do is try to motivate myself by actually seeing myself enjoying the fruits of my hard work (Goals). That way I am able to start liking all the small steps that I need to take that will get me to my goals. And when I start liking the small steps, then I do not have to push to get them completed. You see what I mean?

Norman Vincent Peale taught that if you want to achieve goals, write them down.  Seems too simple, but it really works.  I wrote down my short, medium and long term (life) goals when I was about 24-25 years old.  I found the list again when I was clean out some boxes and realized that I had achieved all of my goals by the time I was 42 years old.  I had not seen that list in years, it was something that just burned into my mind.  --- Also, tell someone that you know well and trust what your plans are. I casually mentioned to my brother that I was looking at going to Johns Hopkins for graduate school.  Four years later, I had my Masters in Public Health from JHU.
