How could this be OK?

I was orienting to pain management where pts have epidural spinal injections. And the nurse gives versed to each pt. through an existing IV line. The procedure she uses is she puts a multiport in a 10cc bottle and uses one syringe all day long. So the same syringe has been in the IV port of up to 30 different pts. When I told her she should not do this she went to the boss. She came back and told me that the DON said it was OK as long as she used a port up high. These pts only have a 50cc bags of normal saline so when they get up to use the rest room or there bag goes empty there whole line might be filled with blood. I don't work there anymore. But I don't think this is OK. What does anyone else think?

| Posted over 2 years ago I personally would not do this. I would use a new syringe for each patient. I think that would be the prudent thing to do. Joyce Harrell, RN, OCN

| Posted almost 2 years ago Dear Account Removed, What world is this nurse living in? You do not use the same syringe for 30 patients, I don't care what the DON said was okay. There is cross-contamination, come on give me a break. It's a question of patient safety here. I have never heard something so unethical in my life! I am really surprised by the nurse's actions and the DON's as well. What state are they in, this is CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't mean to be a fanatic, but you can not think that using a syringe on one patient's IV port and then taking that same syringe to 29 more patients is correct and above board. I hope these people are not still making patient decisions, that will only lead to something very TRAGIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
