I'm 40, married and have a 3 yr old daughter. I want to go to nursing school. After getting a nursing degree, we'd like to try for one more child (frozen embryos). So, should I go for my BSN which will take longer, or just go for my ADN and get my BSN eventually? Another thing is we really need the money and I don't want to work retail or in a cubicle! I need help with this one.

Thanks!

Sandra

ADN (RN) then BSN (because most hospitals (magnets!) are no longer hiring LPNs or ADNs.  Some schools have long waiting lists.  So, make ur decision quickly.

Magnet hosptials will hire ADN's on some occasions if they are eligible to become certified in a certain areas. It does not affect their magnet status if the ADN's are certified.

I got my ADN first (graduated at 38yrs old), then after 2yrs as a practicing RN went back for my BSN.. I found this to be very balanced, as I was able to work as a nurse and still progress in the field. Learning and working and working as I learned.. Still learning as I work and plan to continue on to Advanced practice.. maybe when I'm 50.. after some of my loans are paid off..

I have an appt. with an academic advisor at Texas Woman's University tomorrow. That'll help me decide whether or not to do ADN or BSN. I'm already accepted to the school and El Centro community college. So now I just have to make a decision. Wish me luck. Thanks to all that responded.

I just don't see myself going back to school and getting my BSN. Now I'm not working and it's the right time. But we'll see after tomorrow.

Thanks Theresa,

It is exciting no matter what school I go to. El Centro is in downtown Dallas. With TWU the main campus is in Denton, and the nursing college is in downtown Dallas as well. They have a brand new Health Sciences blg there.  I'll have a big commute to Denton to complete my prereq's. But if I do my prereq's in Denton, they nursing college will bump my GPA by 0.4.

That's cool. Denton's still kind of a small town.  What type of nursing do you do? Do you get to travel?

Sandra, I did  travel for approx 1 year.. i was involved with Home land security.. I was  a site manager that would open up all of the sites in the US to begin to Federalise the airports..  It really was pretty awesome to be involved with that. I' hire the people and receive all of the equipment. It was like 2 weeks and your off to another site.. Being that it was on the government, it was 1st class all of the way.. I only wish that was a perm. position.. I also woked 20 years trauma and the next 16 years I taught nursing.. I rell enjoyed all of my positions. Now I own a small com[any that I teach CPR, 1st aid, ACLS etc. for companies, agentcies, and private individuals.. It's alot of fun and keeps me inthe loop. BTW it's nice to meet you.. Teresa

It's nice to meet you too. Wow, you have such an interesting and exciting history. Homeland Security?! That's great!

Right now I'm not working. Just raising my 3-yr old daughter, my dog Ernie, and my husband, and take care of the house, and trying to pursue my dream of being a nurse.

My appt. yesterday with the director of the weekend nursing program went really well. I have to take A&P II, Chemistry, Microbiology, and LIfe Span Psychology in order to apply Feb. 1st 2012. She convinced me to go for my BSN. I have to take the same amt of classes to get my ADN. She suggested to take two in the summer and two in the fall.

Should I cram them in and apply or take one a semester? Alot of the schools have 1 month semesters, most of them do.  I don't know what to do. I'm going to see my advisor at my community college today.

Thanks,

Sandra

I talked to the advisor. She I have to get A's in my sciences to get in b/c the schools are so competitive. So I think I'm going to do it this way:

summer-Life Span

Fall-A&P II

Spring 2012-Microbiology

May minimester-US History II

Summer 2012-Chemistry

Then I'll apply for the class in the Spring 2013. I put into consideration that I have a 3yr old, a husband, a house and dog to take care of, not just school.

It's a weekend program for 2nd degree students and it's a little shorter but they take about 40 students only.

Should I just apply to a community college and try to start school earlier and get my ADN? I hate the thought of that, but I have to think about it.

I think that it is up to what you can work with. I myself am a little older than you ( 43......LOL) anyway I will be graduating from an ADN program in December. It worked out well for me to do the ADN. After I graduate can continue on with my BSN while I am working and the BSN can be done online. While I am working it will also count for clinical hours if they are required, some BSN prograqms don't require additional clinicals if you are licensed. I am a single mom and I need to get to back to working as soon as possible that's why this worked out better for me. You can also usually transfer the non nursing classes towards completion of the BSN which saves taking some classes and time. Good Luck with whatever you choose to do!

I think that it is great being an older student in school. I am more focused and I bring life experience with me that the younger more traditional students don't have.

I see more and more non traditional students entering nursing school each semester!

I am proof that it's never too late to begin or continue your education!

Maybe you should scratch that itch and go for it!!

Btw by looking at your picture I would have never guessed that you are 52. It's obvious that you take really good care of yourself!

You look great!

I was a bit confused about the post stating that some hospitals dont hire ADN RNs. Where is this at? Where I'm at, a RN is a RN, regardless of whether she has an Associate's degree or a Bachelor's degree. The pay difference is only a $1-2/hr. Though the majority of BSN grads tend to get hired for administrative rather than floor positions. To each their own, I went to RN school to be floor nurse, not a paper pusher.

Thanks for that GREAT compliment Betty. I just don't know what I want to take. I would LOVE to go to the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. I already went to school last year as a wellness coach. Long term goal, I really see myself with a holistic multidisciplinary practice. I have studied aromatherapy, and herbalism, and nutrition.  I am a member of the holistic nurses association. I would love to have a holistic practice, with a massage therapist, reflexologist, chiropractor, and accupuncturist. So, I am not sure that I want a masters in nursing. I am leaning more toward studies in my passion.
