What are the pros and cons of the OR RN & surgical Tech. I am considering the best to go into. I am already in my 40's. Should I shot for the RN or Surg Tech.

Thanks!

You know every thing has Pros and Cons. What I would do is visit differents units, and see which gets you more excited.. As for  surg tech or Rn, that depeinds  on how much time you are wiling to give for schooling. They are both admiral proffesions.  Best of luck to you and please keep us informed. This is a very exciting time for you... Teresa

That sounds like a good idea. We have a teaching hospital here and the company I work for has good relationships w/ them. I will go for a tour of each unit and go from there. Will send you more questions after that. thanks!

I agree with Teresah. No one here can suggest what you would rather do. You have to look deep within yourself to see what it really is that YOU are most motivated by,

Well, I know for sure I want to be in ortho surgery, I enjoy administration, but, don't want to do that if it keeps me away from the personal touch with human beings. I have a huge heart and a strong mind. I want to be where both go hand in hand.

That's why I left management one time. I got too far removed from the patients.

AS for OR nurse or surge tech...in my experience in a small rurual hospital, the nurse was the gopher and the surg tech was assisting the surgeon. However one can go farther with an RN license. RN's have a wide variety of setting to choose from. If ya get tired of surgery or have a hard time standing in one postion for hours on end, and you're a tech there is not much else you can do. Also RN's are licensed and I'm not sure about surg tech. Also check out the pay scale. Also make sure your college is accredited in case you want to go back and get a degree in nursing, so that your credits transfer.  Good Luck

"I would suggest you to go with what interests you. Your interests and circumstances can be the best deciding factor for you to pick any of these. Study about each of the courses which are included in each of these programs & check what career paths they offer. Look if any of these paths match with your goals.

If you are compassionate and keen on serving the human kind, then I believe nursing is the way to go. You can enroll for an Associate Degree In Nursing or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree. Evaluate both the nursing degrees by looking at the course contents and talking to the college authority. Once you have completed either of these, you'll need to pass the NCLEX-RN exam to obtain a license to practice as a Registered Nurse."

Good luck with your career.  I must say that I have had a year in the OR as a RN and you must have very thick skin and be prepared for a tough road.  I am now looking for a position back on the floor, OR nursing was not for me. I found circulating very boring, but everybody is different and you may love it.  It is hard to break into the OR and make sure you are able to spend a few days shadowing a nurse or as an observer. However, my year that I have spent in the OR is an asset to me and my career.   Good luck!

Michelle, Is there a way that you can shadow the 2 areas that apeal to you? I'd ask administration if it was posible.. You already have the OR expierence, so you would just have to visit the  floor.. Best of Luck, and keepus posted..Teresa
