You are never too old to back to school! If becoming a nurse is what you really want you will do it. I am older than you and a single mom with 3 kids aged 12,9 and 2. I will be graduating in December from an ADN program.

It is hard and daunting, sometimes I think that I will never get through it. But I am getting through it and I am doing pretty good too!

I started back to school in 2006, I had my son in 2008 and got accepted into my program in 2010. I started out part time and I am full time since being in my program.

Having children makes fitting in time for studying more difficult than for someone without children, but it is not impossible. You just have to make time for studying that works best with everyone's schedule. I study a lot at night when the kids are in bed. My 12 yr old helps keep the 2 yr old entertained at other times. I also study on the one week day that I don't have clinical or class while the children are in school and the 2yr old is at daycare. I keep my 2yr old in daycare even if I am home. It keeps his routine consistent for him and gives me time at home by myself to study or catch up on cleaning or what ever.

As a mom you will be setting a great example for you children to see that anything can be acheived if you work at it.

It is a great example for my daughters especially.

Where there is a will there is a way. You can acheive anything you set your mind to.

Good Luck!! I think that you should go for it!!

You are not too old if your old I must be getting close to retirement since I will be 44 when I graduate............LOL

I love posting this article for anyone who thinks they are too old to get into nursing. It talks about a 60 year old graduate in the intro:

I am 52, and have been an RN for 21 years. Finished it a little late. But at 28 I asked if I were too old. The thing is.... look at it this way. In 3 years you will be 38. You will be 38 whether you go to nursing school or not. So, at 38 you can either be a nurse, or not.

I used tro worry about that alot myself. I started nursing school at 50. I am now 52 and will graduate in 4 months. I agree with Herbal Nurse: I would be 52 anyway, might as well be graduating nursing school regardless of how old I am, right? The reccession has put alot of "non-typical" college students back in school. Since I've been in school I have heard of lots and lots of "mature" students going back to college. I didnt even know if I would like nursing as a profession when I started, but I have found that I love it!!!  Go for it. If I can do it, ANYONE can do it!

Please read through: New Student at 48.  That forum is over a year old and that student is about half way through school.  I think that you will like it.

My own contribution to that Forum was:

Hi.

I am  just stepping into this conversation, but I wanted to tell you that age is just a number.  One of the members of my class had been a secretary all of her life, raised her family, was on Social Security and decided that she always wanted to be a nurse, and did it.

I met her children at graduation, mine were in strollers, hers were older than I was.

Conceive, Believe and get off your backside and do what YOU really want to do

If you want to do nursing, do it.  If you want to dive off an oil rig and weld underwater, do that, but do not worry about how old you are.

The only limitation that I know of is not age, but physical and emotional disability.  I was knocked out of nursing because of a severe back injury and PTSD and am 100% Totally and Permanently Disabled.  I had to retire my license (required practice hours).

I do this on Nursing Link.  It is not easy for me.  It  is actually frustrating, because I fight the fog of the pain and pain medications.  This causes me to write and re-write these notes up to 10 times to get grammer and spelling correct.

Luckily for me, they cannot fire me for working too slow.

Go achieve your dream and quit worrying about age (Have you seen the latest People magazine?  Christie Brinkley is 59 years old, still modeling and I think that she looks as good now as she ever has. [I'm just back from the dentist's office]).

" If you have the time, patience and ,"plan to keep the little ones preoccupied," I would say," GO FOR IT !"

Don't let anyone admonish you for your age; even physicians may continue practicing up to / including their 80's.

**Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ; just because school has been out, moons ago,it doesn't mean education

should come to a complete standstill.** Take the initiative,( read medical journals and anything in print related to

the healthcare field.)** Sometimes, it takes just one person to accomplish the tasks of many. I'm 46 years old,

I have acquired 27 years of healthcare training as an LPN and am very proud of it. Good luck to you !"

Hey, you are never too old to learn. I went back and attended LPN school Feb. 2010 -Feb. 2011. I aced all my classes, Anatomy and Physiology,Pharmacology, Nutrition, Med-Surg I & II, Pediatrics, Mental Health, Geriatrics, and Obstetrics. I had the highest grade average of anyone in the class of 19, and I am thirty-eight years old. So, forget all the stuff of why you shouldn't attend and go!
