Hi, the reason i'm in this  website is because i'm at my breaking point. I am 23 years old and for the past 3 months i have been sick. I've had a recuring cough that just seems not to go away and now i'm loosing my hearing. At first my ears would pop, just like they do  when you are in high altitudes, but since a couple of days i've noticed that people really have to raise their voices to talk to  me. I have gone to my doctor and hehas prescribed to me robitussin for cough and he only gave me  a one day supply. (what the heck is that gonna do?) and Benadryl, which makes me feel high, so i  stopped taking it after my first one. so after a week  of not getting any better, i returned to see him and i told him that i didnt take the benadryl and that i was still deaf, and he said i had to take it and that would help with my hearing. Well here we are days later and im just becoming angry because i have finished the medication and i'm still the same. I am starting to question if he is a real doctor. I'm still coughing and deaf. if i try to change doctors it will take at least a month, and i just dont wanna stay deaf for another month! I am just so irritated, so here i am asking if i can do anything at home, or anything i can buy over the counter. PLEASE HELP!

I'm very sorry tohear about your affliction. I think what I would do  is get a secomd opinion.. May be an EENT. maybe a hearing specialist or both.. It's obvious you 1st relm of tx is not working. And as nurses we know Dr.s are only human.. Maybe this is something he's never come accross..I wish you the very best of luck.. God bless you and good luck.. Please keep us posted..Hys and Prayers for you.. Teresa

" I recently experienced the similar concern,( run down, elevated temp, vertigo,etc.).Turns out, my GP discovered I had impacted wax in

my ears, especially the rt.ear.Before ordering numerous meds, the simplistic thing to do,( especially as a nurse),is to calmly suggest,

" while I'm here, can you take a look at....."I'm sure your GP is a good listener. After rounds of Debrox gtts.,I definitely felt better!"

I hope you have been able to get help with your situation. As nurses, it would be out of our scope of practice to give you medical advice in your situation.  I believe the suggestions here are all great, and point toward seeking help from your provider, or a second opinion. Let us know how you are doing!
