all of your posts have helped me to realize that it is never too late. I just turned 40 in March and want so badly to go back to school. Only problem is I am unemployed and have a husband that not exactly supportive of my becoming a nurse. Doesnt think I could make it. Any suggestions or advice where to turn? I have the opportunity to take a 3 week CNA course that would give me more skills to find work but it is the money issue and husband issue. Help!!!!!!!!!

I'm 48 yrs young, with two sons graduating high school, one son in elem school and one girl in high school. I worked for the same company for 24 years, before moving to a different town, because my husband, a coach, was transferred, which brought me to quitting my job. Several times during those years, I wanted badly to start working towards a nursing career. I took Med Termin, for one semester, but never went back to school. With two boys graduating this spring, I've decided the time is right and I want more than anything to finally following my calling in nursing. At this point in time, I have to wonder if I've waited too long...48 years old and just starting...not really knowing where to start...I did just take a CNA class as a first step. Can anyone give me some advice please?

Ages are just numbers!!! so they shouldn't worry please!! my must finish your goal to become a nurse!!!

I am 38 years young also! I have a degree in Broadcast Journalism. I was a disc jocky for 10 years, working for several radio stations as an on-air personality. Talk about a 180! I went back for my CNA in 2002 and EMT license. I worked for an ambulance service, but I didn't like the odd hours. SO, here I am at 38 finally deciding what I want to do with the rest of my life. I never think one is too old to start something new if they REALLY love it. We had a 70+ lady finish nursing school and practiced nursing for nearly ten years. Now that is awesome! So, ANYbody motivated enough can do it! JUST GO FOR IT! IF YOU NEVER TRY, YOU ARE SURE TO FAIL!

A good man loves other. A better man loves God. A great man loves God and lives well among others! I miss you daddy!

Anyone over 55 in the NP program? I'm 56 and starting it. Feels scary some days and on others, it feels OK to be out there working at it when I should be thinking retirement. Been an RN since 73. Worked at it for many years, but was seriously injured, disabled and then went back to school and got a PhD in another field. Now I am back and enrolled for the NP prgram. But scared about the age thing. Good to read your encouraging words - it really helps. thank you

I guess it depends on what type of nursing you are dreaming of doing and whether or not it will be too taxing physically. No doubt the heart and desire are the drivers for ambition, but once you reach your goal...sometimes it's a bi#@*.

You are only as old as you feel. That being said, hospital bedside nursing is physically taxing on the body.
But nusing today is soooo different than years ago. Nursing has branched out into many directions. Community, insurance, forensics& informatics are just a few new areas where nurses can bring their skill, compassion and all around awsomeness. Go for it ! :o)

I think you should follow your dream.

I've always wanted to become a RN but did not get further than an LVN. I worked 30+ years in clinics for Dr.'s and got my kids educated. Now I'm 67 years old and feel I've not completed my education and can't do anything about it. So you hang in there and follow your dream.

Good luck

I first give all the glory to my Father in Heaven and Jesus Christ.I its never to late!. No matter what life obstacles you have. God will bring you through. I'm 45 and I'm starting my pre-req this September. In the meantime I enrolled in community college to complete my general education towards my A.A. I have a long way to go.  In the past two years I went through hell with my brother being murder, my son (24) having kidney disease and relapsing, my 18 year old daughter was misdiagnosed with cancer and then my mother left the state (yes I'm a momma's girl). I believe no matter what you go through, FAITH IN GOD WILL DELIVER YOU THROUGH ANY SITUATION. This is why I believe if you STAY FOCUSED, SET YOUR GOAL, STUDY HARD that you can achieve a Nursing Degree. I've always wanted to be a nurse and now God has giving me my time to do this. I can proudly say, Gods will, will  be done, I'm believing in Faith that I will be a Nurse in June 2011. And I wil still be young, passionate, vibrate, outgoing, God loving, kind hearted, gentle and professional Nurse. STEP OUT IN FAITH, TRUST IN THE LORD, LEAN NOT ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING AND become that which you desire........ A NURSE

Ever since I can remember I wanted to be a nurse! I started Nursing school in 2005 at age 48. One of my classmates was 62 and graduated at the top of our class. I left in second semester for several reasons. One being burnt out and not enough confidence. I also had a daughter that had a liver transplant at this time and she needed me too. I am now 2 yrs later at age 50 still wanting to fulfill that dream and am ready to tackle it again. I have a question to anyone out there.

Tomorrow in fact I meet with the Dean of Nursing! To talk and to prepare to re-enter in January. This time I am trying to look at all my options a little clearer. I don't want to blow this again! Quitting will not be an option.

My question is advice concerning a fast paced Associate or to go for the BSN. I have my prereqs just about done to enter a BSN. it would only take me 2 more semesters to finish. I want to succeed this time! IDoes the other program allow more time in each class or is it both equally fast paced? I am a slow learner in Dosages and needed a tutor as it had been yrs since I looked at a math problem. I only took the math in school that I needed to graduate.

I know we are never too old to go back to school. Older people do bring life experiences too.

Any advice would be appreciated
