Posted over 5 years ago Hi! I was just wondering if anyone knows about any free or low cost CNA training programs provided by hospitals on Long Island (Nassau or Suffolk). I am starting a LPN program in March and would just like to get some experience in healthcare while going to school. |

| Posted over 5 years ago I don't know about Long Island, but here in California, you can challenged the boards and get your CNA certificate, after the first semester in nursing school. The first semester of LPN school is what CNA's do. Check with your board of nursing in your state. Good Luck!! I am a proud mother of three beautyful daughter. I currently live in Los Angeles California. I've worked as a heathecare provider for almost 10 years. I am curently in school to pursue my MSN in nursing, and wants to work as a pediactric nurse, in public health. |

So, I need to be able to list that I have completed 4 months or one semester of nursing school on my application/resume? I am in the prereq classes stage (1st sem)... What has been your experience of trying to apply as a nurse aid somewhere - would I be out of luck because I am not in the actual nursing program yet? I want to get my feet wet ASAP, hopefully with pay. |

| Posted over 5 years ago If anyone is planning to go into the medical field as a Nurse, good way of finding out if this is a place for you is to work and a N.A. I would recommend it to everyone. Cuttie find out if your School has a CNA program available and just do it . . . It should take no more then one semester. . . especially if you have to wait to get in those Science Classes everyone and their mother are vying for. . . don't wast any time. I did the CNA class and it lead to a Scholarships with a local hospital and a seat into the nursing program. I am starting my second semester. |

Do you have any community colleges in that area? Perhaps they offer something...or speak to them and see if they can point you to another resource. Good luck, Bobbi |

| Posted over 5 years ago I walked into a Nursing Home Facility one day and asked for an Application Form for a Nursing Assistant. I never had any experience in doing the job I was applying for but I asked if they provide training. After the interview I was told to go back for an orientation and training. I got my CNA Certificate (knowledge and skills test with the local communicty college) after 3 months. A Nurse Aide must have at least 75-hour training, clinical and theory. |

| Posted over 5 years ago One thing to avoid is "schools" that offer CNA training online. Clinic time is minimal, if it exists at all. These "schools" are run by fly by night companies who take advantage of students who either want a CNA job but don't want to do the 3 month community college program, or by pre-nursing students who often need to have CNA certification to get into the nursing program (my school doesn't require a CNA yet, but you do get a big chunk of ranking points for it). Neither of the large health care systems in the Piedmont Triad of NC will hire these graduates, and the nursing schools don't recognize it either, making it a huge waste of cash and time. |

| Posted over 5 years ago Yeah, I know here in Chicago you can pay about 800 bucks for an 8 week course for CNA certification at local hospitals. That might be something to check out in your area. |
