My step-dad was just diagnosed with Diabetes last week. He has no family hx. He is around 48(12 years younger than my mom). He has been a smoker most of his life and sadly what I would consdier an alchoholic. So, the other part of this story is that he was told this news on Friday and they asked him to go back in yesterday to do some blood work. They want to rule out pancreatic cancer. Oh dear! He has lost a considerable amount of wt over the last few months and was peeing alot prior to dx and also had vision changes.
I will not worry about that dx unless we have to cross that bridge.
My question is this~he was given an glucometer and because his fingers are so calused from his work he is having great difficulty getting even just a small amount of blood to sample. I suggested that he warm his fingers up with a warm washcloth. Any other ideas or suggestions?
I apprecaite it.

there are new glucometers available which take the samples from other parts of the body, usually the arm. Go to http://www.americandiabetes.com In some cases, they will send these to diabetics free. He may try dangling his hand, much the way we have patients dangle their arms for IV's and blood draws. I think his best long term plan would be to get one of the new glucometers.
