Hi kilay22, I've only been a CNA for over a year now but I can tell you some experiences that I had. Your Nurse will guide you In the Orientation. You have to get familiar with every "resident", if you are working in a Nursing Home, their care guidelines, who goes to what activities, who takes a shower/bath each day and all the other things like nails, shampoo, foot checks, etc. You get to know who get a bed strip, wheel chairs cleaned, rolling walker, and etc., who has alarms and who are on a fall risks. Peri cares, toileting, use of gait belt, all the kinds of lift machine and who needs to be repositioned every hour, 2 hours, and etc.
Many other things about ADLs. But anyway, My first day was just fine. In the orientation...I did not have to do anything yet but to observe and be familiar with the people and staff, where to get supplies, record their output and intakes (I & Os) and charting of activities and ADL's .
Oh yeah, I learned to be immune to the smell, odor, whatever, you would call them during toileting and peri cares. I used to cover my mouth each time so as not to throw up infront of them, (embarrassing). You would know more as you get on with your job, because each facility or hospital has different ways to do it.

my first day was a nightmare. I was sent to a medicare unit in a nursing home and wasn't told that I was covering someone who called in sick. I was in tears by the end of the day from being yelled at by the nurse ( who didn't know I was new ) for not being on top of my assignment and the other cna for the same thing. I went straight to the DON and threatened to quit if this ever happened again. I grew tough skin and sucked it up and it turned out to be a wonderful job to care for the same people day after day.
