Hello. I would like to get some hands-on experience but I am not in the actual nursing program yet. I am in my first semester of prereqs for the ADN Program. What type of employer would hire someone like me (even just for a few hours a week)? I already checked out Red Cross and the volunteer opportunities in my area are not geared towards getting hands-on experience as a nurse aid.

Maybe I'm anxious too early but I don't just want to have an RN degree and not have hands-on experience to back it up. Thanks for any thoughts.

Sini, best experience is getting your CNA and working part time at a long term care facility.

Al - that's what I was thinking... I need to be certified in order for employers to trust me with their patients. I am having issues finding a CNA Program that accommodates my FT working hours. I check the iNET every now and then to see if new CNA Programs (affordable ones) come in my geographic area. I will not go to a Technical College - too expensive for me. Thanks for the feedback.

I agree. I am a CNA full time right now while in the nursing program. It is a lot of work, but I truely believe that having the experience and something to see how what you are learning can apply to things is great. I'd keep looking and try it even for just a day or two a week.

While studing in ADN program, aren't you getting expireence. As far as I know you need to make some hours in the hospital while in the program. Is it considered as experience?

Hi. I think that by being able to list that I'm also a CNA and presently work as one whether its two days a week, may help my resume. Also, I still have a total of 7 prereq classes to finish before I can apply for the nursing program. I think that by working as a CNA (p/t) in the interim will help me in the long run, experience and competition wise.
