What does everybody think about the movie " Sicko"? I am in RN-School right now and the American Nurses Association is a big supporter of this movie. All of us in class had to watch it and I tell you what- there was not a dry eye in the house!
I am used to socialized medicine since I grew up in Germany and it worked for me while I was there. I know change is always a hard thing to do but I would be interested to find out who has watched it and what they think. It is definitely worth watching in my opinion. I am passing the movie around to co-workers to get more feedback, too.

It finally dawned on me....this is the movie about health care delivery/insurance (lack of) in US made by David Moore...or something along those lines. The movie has been out for a year or so right? Will have to see if our local stores have a copy for rent. Thinking it would also be a good movie for my 16 yo son to watch to get extra credit in school (after he writes a report). My 16 yo is a neat kid, he is interested in what goes on out there in our crazy world and likes to make an arguement or comparison on social issues. Thanks for the idea for his project...will be fun for us to watch together. Always interesting to see what other views see or think of...seldom do we all get it.
I will admit, I am a David Moore skeptic, but will put that aside.

I do beleive everyone should have medical care, but can we survive socialized medicine. I don't like the idea of the government controlling our medical system, it's bad enough with the insurance saying what can and can't be done. there is a person stuck in this state needing medical care and our state won't help this person, BUT this persons state won't help either. It's awful that people are falling through the cracks...what do we do??? These people are away from home, away from their support system, ect. This is the government controlling this issue, I just can't imagine what these people are going through, it's bad enough dealing with an ill loved one let alone all this other crap.

Although I'm not a fan of Michael Moore, that was a great movie at a very pertenent time. Frankly, I'm terrified because I am currently uninsured and will have to find a way to come up with some before I start clinicals next year. I think it's ridiculous that in this country I'm working all the time, going to school, and live in constant fear of getting sick or breaking a limb. My mother is actually planning on moving to Canada soon because she has sustained health problems from a car accident and won't be able to afford a life-time of health coverage here in the USA. That she would have to leave country for such reasons, in my opinion, is ridiculous.

If you're interested in health care for all without the trappings of socialist bureaucracy, look into the health-care system of the Netherlands. It's a great mixture of government funding and private options.

I am very glad I started this topic. I am very passionate about ii because we are nurses and our main priority is to take care of patients, I couldn't care less if they are insured or not. I understand that administration is all too well interested and only seeing the dollars...but I do believe if everyone would give a little no one would need to worry about being taken care of when they get sick. I can only encourage everyone to spread this movie from Michael Moore, I admire his guts for stirring up this very sensitive subject. He also has a website Michaelmoore.com if you want more info.

I just watched this movie the other night for the first time. It was very good. I think Moore went overboard on a few issues, but the overall message is right on target. Our health care system is broken and needs to be fixed. We need to get away from the free market system that drives health care in the United States. People are not commodities and should not be treated as such. Health care should be on the same level as law enforcement and fire fighting.

theala, I agree. Doctors I've talked to about are totally against socialized medicine. They fear loss of independence and financial gain. I don't know what the answer is but everyone should have access to health care without fear of how much it is going to cost.

I have a friend who came to the office and she had literally polyps hanging out of her nose!!!!! She just turned 65 and was finally able to get Medicare. She had her own business for years making basket but couldn't afford to be insured and waited years to take care of herself. By the time she finally came to the doctor, her blood pressure was through the roof and those polyps gave her major breathing problems with sleeping disorder etc, you name it....something is wrong with this picture, does anybody agree with me on this one???
I grew up in Germany with socialized medicine and it works. If everybody gives a little, things like polyps hanging out of nostrils wouldn't happen, it is totally unnecessary in my opinion and very sad. Can you imagine all the stress this patient has been going through for years just because she couldn't afford insurance and was working hard to make ends meet but couldn't take care of her own health? Tricare works similar to socialized medicine, so does medicare, we do have examples in this country already of a possiblity that is can work.

I had an experience today that is so frustrating and I have health insurance. The pharmacist would not issue my prescription for Tamiflu to me because it would not go through the system. I provided him with the most current information I had. He offered to give it to me today but I would need a new card by tomorrow or pay $85.00. I am getting sick now and need the Tamiflu so I can keep working and provide for my family. My husband isn't working now, so this is a big expense to me. People would rather you go sick if you can't pay. I felt like those poor people on that movie that couldn't get treated because of no money.

If we have the system like Britian or Canada, there is waiting invoved. My mother in law was having chest pain, they checked her out at the hospital in the ER, no admit, and then set her up for follow up the next week in another city that is capable to deal with cardiac problems. This really blew my mind, she could have been dead waiting for all the labs. They like the system because there isn't any expense, but they are willing to wait. I don't have a problem with waiting for some problems but cardiac can be serious. I don't know the answer, maybe get the lawyers out of health care.

I have heard a lot of bad stories like this also. I don't think most Americans would stand for such wait times. It would really take a culture change. I know if I had chest pain I would want it worked up immediately.
