WebMD / SMOKERS SLOW TO PART WITH CIGARETTES - Smoking contributes to heart attacks, but many smokers who learn they have heart disease still don't kick the habit, according to a new European study. Researchers studied 2,200 heart patients who smoked. Of these, 99% had been told to quit smoking. But less than half (48%) did so. Calling the finding "unbelievable" , one researcher said, "it makes me wonder if they are truly aware of the risk they are taking". PRENATAL ASTHMA RISK FROM SMOKING - Adults may be substantially more likely to get asthma if they were exposed to tobacco smoke in the womb or in childhood, according to a recent study. Researchers who followed more than 2,800 people in Norway, found that those with prenatal exposure to smoke had the highest risk for adult asthma. SMOKING MAY RAISE DIABETES RISKS - Cigarette smokers may be almost 3 times more likely to get type 2 diabetes, according to a recent study. The researchers theorized that smokers tend to have more abdominal fat than people who have never smoked and higher levels of fat in the abdomen are associated with greater risk for diabetes.
