Posted about 2 years ago My family is having a crisis. Our 15 y.o. dog, who had an 8 inch cyst and middle lobe of her liver removed less than a month ago, was at the vet yesterday and she now has a mass and edema of her left leg. Palliative therapy with Oxycontin, then MS-Contin. I am doing full-time nursing again. Taking care of elderly cat and dog (geriatrics/hospice) and counseling the family. Stressful ! ! ! One thing is a bit easier. I am friends with the vet and I get to do the dose-ranging, so I can make changes as needed, so the dog will not suffer because of a day-off or week-end. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers. Tom Tom, PhD, MPH, BS(N), RN-C, CHN |

Posted about 2 years ago Thank you for your thoughts, prayers and notes. I have shared them with my family and they seem to really appreciate them. Update: I had doggy nursing duty last night. She is doing okay. On Oxycontin tid now along with a veterinary analog of Motrin. So far, good quality time. Will figure out more after we have to change to morphine. Again, Thanks, Tom Tom, PhD, MPH, BS(N), RN-C, CHN

Posted about 2 years ago Tela (the dog) is stable on oxycontin 5 mg bid-tid. I have also taught my kids about massage and have been able to reduce the dependent edema in the leg. Still almost no use of leg, but at least the lymphs are not blocked-up with cancer cells. She is comfortable and doesn't mind the extra attention. Tom, PhD, MPH, BS(N), RN-C, CHN

Posted about 2 years ago The dog (Tela) is doing okay. Off narcotics now and just taking a vet motrin. I taught the family about massage and we were able to reduce the swelling and she is putting a little more weight on the leg (although the hip and thigh are really deconditioned). She is using the wheelchair ramp, because the stairs are too difficult and painful for her. My daughter is hoping that she will make it until her baby is born (August due date). Have to see. So far, so good. Tom, PhD, MPH, BS(N), RN-C, CHN

Posted about 2 years ago Update on Tela. She is having on-and-off swelling in the leg, but no real pain and has actually been placing more weight on the leg now. Tom, PhD, MPH, BS(N), RN-C, CHN

At noon today, we went into the vet and we had to put her down. Just before that: From 6am to 10am, I had given her MS 500 mg, Oxycodone 15 mg and Klonepin 1 mg. I thought that I would have overdosed her as I was giving her more and more morphine. We were in the vets and he had put 3/4 of his solution in and lost the vein and even as he was getting another syringe to do a different vein, she didn't even fall asleep. It was after the second full syringe that she slowed down, then went down. I felt really bad, because I could have at least doubled her dose for some relief. Now my wife and daughter are crying almost constantly and I imagine that will go for a couple of days. I am just too damn tired right now. I have been up the last two nights solid (a week on and off before that) taking care of her, calming her, drugging her, taking her for walks and I am a wee bit short on sleep right now. Last phase is to be at the vets next Tuesday. My wife and daughter could possibly hurt the guys from the cremation place if they throw our dog into the back of the truck. I am going to try to prevent that from happening.

Posted almost 2 years ago Nineteen days ago we had to have our 15 yo dog, Tela. put down after having her as a pet for 12 years. This morning, I was with my son's 21 yo cat, Sebastian, as he went into his death rattle, then ceased to exist here on Earth. Everyone had said their goodbyes last night. He was sick, but could still follow your face. My son woke me at 1 am because he could not sleep and he was concerned about Sebastians myoclonic spasms. I gave him some liquid MS by mouth and he calmed down again (the cat). Then, I found him still trying to hang-on at 5 am. He stopped breathing at 5:20 am. Thank you all for you support through the passing of both of our pets. Tom, PhD, MPH, BS(N), RN-C, CHN

Posted almost 2 years ago I 'm so sorry for your loss of your pets, they truly are family members and it hurts just as bad when we lose one. Please accept my deepest sympathies in this time of your loss. I'm sure your family is grieving since the both passed.. I could only take this as God needed more angels and angelsthey are.. Please try not to grieve to long that they are gone, but cherish the time and memories that they were with you. Hugs,Teresa

Posted almost 2 years ago Thank you Teresa. How you stated about God needing more angels in heaven and He wanted our pets out of pain, was how we tried to make my 6 yo granddaughter understand all of this emotion going on in the home. The hardest one to deal with right now is our 1 yo barn cat, Precious. She came to us at 1 day old. The vet was not sure that she would make it. She is now about 13 lbs (a porker for her body type). Anyway, she became attached to Tela (the dog) and because it was the only animal that did not push her away, she acted like Tela was her mommy. She started to pick up characteristics of the dog (the way she lays down, fetching her ball, coming to us when we whitsle). She now is wondering around the house, looking and smelling for the dog and cat, then she will come to us look at us with that look that says: "Okay, where are they", "I want to play." She has also been nipping and cranky because she does want her normalicy back. Thanks again for all of your thoughts and prayers. Tom and Family Tom, PhD, MPH, BS(N), RN-C, CHN

Posted almost 2 years ago Tom, I am absolutely positive that pet's grieve too. Precious is grieving just as you are. Maybe more because they can't relate. I think a lot more attention from the family is what she needs. I also will pray for her. 1 thing that may help is a toy from your pets that have passed.. That may give her some peace.. Pets, god love them.. Hugs,Teresa

| Posted almost 2 years ago Dear Dr. Tom, I'm just now reading this post, and I'm sorry about your dog Tela and cat Sebastian. I have 6, and there are my life! I have 4 puppies and 2 older dogs. I know how I am when they are sick and I do pray for them every night before I sleep. My little puppies are Pit/English mix. The Dad is full Pit, and they have an older brother who is Pit/English,too. Rudy, their older brother looks like his Mom-Basco. The puppies are ToTo,BoBo, PeeWee, and Twyla, 3 girls and one boy. Their just so precious, and I can't imagine my life without them. They all like to come up to me and lick me on the hand or arms. They are just loving dogs!!!!!!!!!! I'm thinking about all the pets I've had over the years, and they all hold a place in my heart. I believe you must have endless love in your heart to have a pet. They want love just as humans, that's what I believe. I got my 1st dog MaryKay when I was 6, and she was killed the 2nd week I had her. She got ran over by someone who was speeding down our bumpy country road, and he couldn't see her. I cried all that night over my little puppy, it broke my heart!!!!!!! I can't forget little MaryKay and I never will, she was my first pet. I will keep you in my prayers, dear friend, and your pets, too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
