How do we get Surgical Techs licensed!!  Today surgical techs are required to know and do more with a variety of cases.  Knowledge of medications, General, Vascular, Gyn, ENT, OB in delivering babies and Orthopedic and Neuro instrumentation to prepare and assist  surgeons in surgery.  In the early 60's RN's would scrub and assist in surgery and the surgical tech was the circulator.  The roll reverse and now very few nurses scrub or even want to learn how to assist in surgery.  I believe we need to licensed the Surgical tech with a professional licensed through each state and government.  Thereby recognizing there position and abilities in the Intraoperative field.

What do they have now? A certification or what? What difference would licensure make?

I'm sure the board of surgical assitants, could tell you why or why not. Or they could begin to do that if it is voted on...Godd luck to you...Teresa
