Hi fellow nurses. I wanted to know who gave you a chance as a new nurse? All replies welcomed.

I was an LPN Student doing my clinicals walking down the hall on a Medical Floor one day when a bedside table came flying out of a room. I had heard in report that the Patient in that particular room was from the State Mental Hospital. I looked in to see the Male Patient with his back to me moving toward a Female Nurse backed into a corner looking wide-eyed. I asked the them what was happening and neither answered. Believing that the Patient was  about to attack a Nurse made aphasic by fear, I came up behind him and put a hold on him. He struggled against me and I let him know I was wanting to be sure everyone was safe. I told him if he calmed down, I would release him. He calmed and I relaxed my grip.

In the meantime, Security had been summoned, and the Chief of Security arrived on the scene just in time to witness my containment and release of the Patient. He was so impressed with my actions that he went to the DON and suggested that I be hired for the new Psych Unit which was to be opening shortly after my graduation from the LPN Program.

A few months later, I began my career in Psych Nursing which has dominated the last 28 years of my Nursing work. And I give my appreciation for that Security Chief for giving me the chance.

On a side note, I later found out the Patient I had subdued was both blind and deaf. He began acting out due to the fact that he hadn't had a BM that day. The Nurses communicated with him by tracing letters to the words they wanted to communicate on the palm of his hand.  Although he believed to the contrary, having a BM every day is not a necessity.

I guess that I should also give thanks to that Patient I subdued who couldn't see or hear me coming for assisting me in getting started in my new career.
