Posted over 1 year ago How do you as a nurse manage stress and burnout? Do you tell others about it? Do you suffer in silence? Joyce Harrell, RN, OCN

| Posted over 1 year ago You are going to laugh over one of my stress managments. When I was an anesthesia nurse for an oral surgeon, we butted heads all the time over the meds I was to push, the expiration dates on the drugs, etc. One time, when I was cleaning one of our operatories, the oral surgeon passed the door, backed up and said "Now that is what I like to see, a nurse on her hands and knees". During the growing season along the Gulf Coast, I would head home from my job with this guy, take off my scrubs and throw them in the washing machine. I would then dress in jeans and a t-shirt, go outside and pull weeds. Before pulling the weeds, I gave the weeds a name, then as I pulled them from the ground I would say "Take that you so and so". Healthy release and accomplished my yard work at the same time. Always felt much better!!! I did, however, always made sure my son did not hear me...he would have learned a new language!!! I never suffer in silence. There is always help to be found if one is feeling stressed or burnout. A professional therapist can help, along with quality sleep, exercise, hobbies, reading, listening to music, or pulling WEEDS from flower beds! Nursing causes all of us, at some time or another, grief over the loss of a patient, stress, burnout, problems with idiot doctors, other nurses with agendas. I focus on my patient, my plan of care and incorporate all of the positive help I can find. By forming a "team", everyone has input, plays a role in accomplishing the plan together. This is why I always dug in with my CNAs...they are very important to me in so many ways and I highly respect the hard work they do. |

| Posted over 1 year ago My best way to relieve stress was to go out to eat after work with some fellow coworkers and we would talk about our day. It was like a support group for stressed out nurses. This was a good way not to take out our issues about work on family,friends etc. If I could not go out with them my family could usually tell I had a really bad day by the way I looked. My eyes were bulging out,my arms were just limp,my legs were draging and my face was drawn.I tried not to have an attitude with anyone so I would take a hot shower or try to nap.I had no kids at the time so I could get away with this. I did not have to cook for them,do homework with them,get them ready for school the next day or be a soccer mom.My hat goes off to these nurses.For the male nurses they are in the same boat with the female nurses with chores,dealing with the kids etc. Did you ever think of getting a punching bag or having a couple jolts of eletric shock? Just kidding. My heart goes out to all nurses for a job well done! Joni |

| Posted about 1 year ago My way to fight burnout is dance, sometimes, alone, with the loudest music in the whole world: crazy? No!. other times, when I finish my work, I run for more than 45 minutes, other days: cleaning is my medicine!
