Hi, I have been provisionally accepted into an lpn program. I have a question on whether the medication i take is accepted since a drug screen is part of the final acceptance process. Is Klonipin an acceptable medication to take? I currently take two milligrams a day.

If you ever have a question regarding nursing, problems in nursing, if you can legally perform a task within your license, always email or call your State Board of Nursing. If you call about this medication, you will get the proper advice and answer from the "horse's mouth".

My State Board of Nursing (BON) in Texas, has been my source for many years as our skills have progressed. I always make sure, before hand, that I am acting within my license.

Some medications are allowed if prescribed by an MD. If you do not wish to give your name, you do not have to identify yourself.  You may also look at the required paperwork that you submit when you apply for, or renew your license. It is in these forms, that you have to attest to certain physical handicaps or mental illness.

Good luck, and God Bless. Contrats on being accepted to nursing school.

Klonopin (clonazepam) is a benzodiazepine, and falls under the catagory of being a controlled substance. Since controlled substances can be abused, your concern is a valid one, brinkley. However, just because clonazepam has the ability to be abused, it doesn't mean that you should not be accepted into a Nursing Program merely because of its use. If you have a current prescription from a Medical Professional (Doctor or Nursing Practioner), there should be no problem. Two milligrams is well within the range of a typical daily dose.

Sometimes it's a wise idea to inform Program Officials of your medication regimen, as many Schools of Nursing dictate that a urine drug screen be performed before admission and on a random basis.

Good luck to you, brinkley.

Always have up to date documentation from your PCP on file and in your purse.    If you are in a clinical  setting with patients you will need to advise your instructor. In certain cases of accident or injury involving a patient or yourself you could be required to give a specimen. This has to do with patient safety and liability.  If a medication is still in your system even if you haven't taken it that day, YOU are still suspect for working while impaired. Believe me, you do not want to go there.

I've worked all over the US as a military spouse. After you become licensed  most medical facilities ask that you report medical conditions, medications to occupational health. Your confidentiality is kept. An assessment is done along with follow ups every few months. This is to assure your workload is safe for you and your patients. A brief letter is written saying...Mary Smith is fit for full duty, or light duty.  No other info is given.

Hope this helps.

Hi, you are on a small dose of Klonopin(2mg a day). It would be a different matter I believe if you were on a much larger dose. Have your Rx with you and maybe a note from your PCP saying you are highly functional and able to work and perform your duties.         Joni
