I am a nurse and a recovering alcoholic. I worked in a susbance abuse Rx center for several years since my clean time. When I went back to being a med/surg nurse I was shocked how alcoholics were treated by nurses and Doctors. They were referred to as drunks etc. Give me your opinion are they just low life drunks or people with a Disease. Oh by the way my charge nurse smelled like etoh several times at the beginning of our shift. Was she a drunk or did she just have a little problem with etoh?

Hiya, I think the question was are do nurses have a disease or are they just drunks. We all know that Etoh ism and drug addiction is an illness.   With that said, we also know that some people tend to not understand or have preconcieved notions of what this disease is.. Unforntunately, there is really nothing we can do about it unless it is blatenly said to our face and we are denied a position due to that reason..Then it is discrimination..So as far as a position goes, it may be the luck of the straw who you interview with or work with.. Just continue your work and give it your best like always.. Good luck and God Bless you in all of your future endeavors...Please keeep us posted...Teresa
