I am a Director of Wellness for a personal care home.  I can not tell you how many times I had to drop my plans and go in because of call offs. Or no call no shows. Last week my Monday off a call off occured and this time I told them I was away.   Through out the day I kept getting text messages from the Administrator.  We are short what are your plans?  I called her back and explained to her that I was not home and can not be expected to come in every time there is a call off.  I was told that that is what I signed on for.

I do not think that I should  always drop my plans and run in every time there is a call off.  I should not be expected to sit by the phone like a dog waiting to be called in.  I am so frustrated because I am afraid to make plans.  I also do not think that my days off should be mandated nor should my boss expect me to always drop my plans and run in.

My question is, is that waht a DOW or DON is expected to do?  Should my days off  be spent waiting for a call?  And is it fair for my boss expect that of me.  PLease give me advice.

This is how I solved the same problem. When I was the ADON in LTC, I was the nurse who sub'd for the no calls and no shows...no matter what day of the week or the shift. The weekends were paid 32/40. One time, I worked three weeks in a row, then had to perform my ADON duties during the rest of the day or night and come in on weekends.

When I finally became fed up with this...took about 4 months, I called the Administrator and told her the following: "I demand to be released from my salary pay and begin being paid by the hour + extra for weekends and nights". This immediately caused a "Nurse On Call" list to be made, for staffing during all days and shifts. I laughed to myself, because I was in charge of managing the staffing sheets for 6 week periods at a time, but only for the CNAs. Now, I was able to manage the On Call Sheet for the Charge Nurses!!!!! YEA!!!!!!!!!

Amazing to me, was the no calls and no shows diminished rapidly. The Charge Nurses did not want to "hack off" their fellow Charge Nurses.
