I'm a 27 year old mama looking to get into the nursing field.  This has been a dream of mine for about four years and financially, I'm ready to begin the steps to making it happen by first beginning pre-reqs and then applying to the local community college to become an RN.

Here is my question... I have well-controlled rheumatoid arthritis and take Humira and Methrotrexate.  With those medications, I'm symptom free.  This is no small feat as a few years ago, simply walking to the restroom was a difficult task.  Those drugs were miracle drugs that gave me my life back.  Now I'm ready to begin thinking about a career...

While my passion is nursing, I need some honest feedback.  I'm immunosupressed and will not be able to be vaccinated.  I don't want to accept defeat here and I'd ultimately LOVE to be a nurse.  I have a huge passion for that.  Will my condition prevent me from being accepted into a nursing program, are waivers available to not be vaccinated, and am I putting myself in danger working in a hospital where I could potentially be exposed to TB or other communicable diseases?

Thanks.  I've discussed this with a couple of doctors and had several different responses from...I can't let this condition control my life, go for my dreams...to find another dream, you cannot work in a hospital setting.

Just want some real feedback.

Jcummings, wow congratulations on your decision.. This is really a topic to discuss with your doctors..I would be very interested to know exactly what their opinions are..  But if you are as determined as I think, then nothing may will you.. There are nurses with disabilities and they do great.. I'm sure you will get some great advice here on the NL, too.. So get some necessary information and then go from there.Best of luck to you and please keep us posted.. Teresa
