Posted 12 months ago So what would you do? For what it's worth, my answer is the last one. War may be hell, but that doesn't mean I need to fan the flames. The reason I'm asking this is because I just read the position statement from the International Council of Nurses in Geneva which reads in part: "The ICN Code of Ethics for Nurses states that …the fundamental responsibility of the nurse is to promote health, prevent illness, to restore health and to alleviate suffering. However we recognise that nurses are sometimes called upon to perform physical examinations before prisoners’ interrogation and torture, to attend torture sessions in order to provide care, and/or to treat theeffects of torture." It sounds like the ICN is saying that nurses aren't allowed to particpate in torture, but they understand that we will and that it's really ok. You'll have to enter the usual http:// and the www before the rest of this address to go to the pdf file (something about the forum's software won't let me post the link): icn.ch/images/stories/documents/publications/position_statements/E13_Torture_Death_Penalty_Executions.pdf
Also, how do you interpret this position statement by the ICN? Are they giving us permission to particpate in torture? |

| Posted 12 months ago And what is your answer? Maybe you have another answer that is not listed among the options I posted...
Hmm...I just thought of two other options that I should have included when I posted the poll: Answer #6: "Yes, I would assist in torture, but only if I myself was physically threatened into doing so." Answer #7: "Yes, I would assist, but only so that I could secretly undermine the torture effort by helping the patient to withstand and resist it"

| Posted 12 months ago This is something I don't think anyone can answer.. My opinion..I think that being put into that position would be a horrible thing to happen. I suppose if you are there, an answer may come to you.. It's kind of like being pro ilfe or not.. I don't know or at least I don't think that I could or would want to have to make a decision like that.. Sorry, but that's my opinion.. Teresa |
