I've been an ICU/ER nurse for over 10 years. Recently because of the change in shifts being in a registry position I decided I wanted a change! I was talking c/ a dialysis nurse in ICU and she offered me a job. So just like that I start soon.. It will be 4 weeks of class time and 6 months OTJ training with an RN for a acute position in 4 different hospitals. I'm looking forward to not being in the same hospital for 12 hour shifts. The hourly pay is substantially less (I will have to work 40 hours to make what I do in 28 hours at the hospital)but the benefits are great. Currently I am without any benefits but get paid a high hourly salary. My question is has anyone else gone from fast paced to dialysis and loved it? hated it? Pros? Cons? I'm in my 40's I'm in great shape and run mini marathons but the 12 hour shifts are getting old and switching from days to nights. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!

HIya ernurse, As an er nurse my self and also an educator, I can understand nyour need for a change. It would be a good thing for benefits if you need them but it is very different nursing.. This wouldn't hurt you on your resume, howeverif you want to ever return to the ER, then you may have to get more education to keep up with the changes... Best of luck to you..Please keep us posted..
