DISEASES CAUSED BY HPV

THESE HPV TYPES ARE OUT THERE

When it comes to human papillomavirus (HPV

), there are 4 types of the virus you should really know about. That’s because they cause the most cases of HPV-related diseases in males and females. Each day in the United States, 30 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer (about 11,000 women per year) and it is estimated that each minute there is a new case of genital warts in men and women.

HPV Types 6 and 11 cause about 90%

of genital warts cases in females and males.

HPV Types 16 and 18 cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases in females.

HPV Types 16 and 18 also cause about 70% of vaginal cancer cases and up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases in females.

All HPV types that affect the genital area can cause abnormal Pap tests in females.

Get the Facts About HPV

Human papillomavirus or HPV is a virus you may not know too much about—but you should. HPV will affect an estimated 75% to 80% of males and females in their lifetime. For most, HPV clears on its own. But, for others who don’t clear certain types, HPV could cause significant consequences: cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers in females. Other types could cause genital warts in both males and females. And there’s no way to predict who will or won’t clear the virus.

So take a look around. Getting the facts about HPV and the diseases it causes is the first step toward helping to protect against it.

WHO GETS

HPV Both males and females get HPV.

Diseases Caused

HPV can cause cervical cancer, genital warts, or other diseases.

CERVICAL CANCER

Each day in the United States, 30 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer (about 11,000 women per year) and 11 women die from it. Cervical cancer is cancer of the cervix (the lower part of the uterus

that connects to the vagina

). Unlike other cancers, cervical cancer is not considered to be passed down through family genes. Cervical cancer is caused by certain types of a virus—human papillomavirus or HPV.

When a woman is infected with certain types of HPV, and the virus doesn’t go away on its own, abnormal cells

can develop in the lining of the cervix. If these abnormal cells are not found

early and treated, precancers and then cervical

cancer can develop.

GENITAL WARTS

It is estimated that each minute in the United States, there is a new case of genital warts. About 2 out of 3 people will get genital warts after having any kind of genital contact with someone infected. Even after seeing pictures of genital warts, you may not be able to recognize them. That’s because genital warts don’t always look the same.

Genital warts are usually flesh-colored growths that can be raised or flat, small or large, and alone or in clusters. In females, warts can grow inside a woman’s vagina, or on the cervix, making them hard to see. In males, they can appear on the surface of the penis or groin.

Treatment for genital warts can be a painful process and can involve cutting, freezing, or burning the warts. Even after treatment, genital warts can come back. In fact, 25% of cases come back within 3 months.

OTHER HPV CANCERS

VAGINAL CANCER

There are several types of vaginal cancer, but most types are commonly found in the lining of the upper area of the vagina near the cervix.

Certain types of HPV have been closely linked to vaginal cancers. In fact, HPV Types 16 and 18 cause approximately 70% of vaginal cancer cases.

VULVAR CANCER

Vulvar cancer is a type of cancer that forms just outside the vagina in an area called the vulva. HPV Types 16 and 18 cause up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases.

PAP TESTS SAVE WOMEN’S LIVES

Having regular Pap tests is one of the best ways to help protect against cervical cancer in the future. A Pap test doesn’t diagnose HPV. But it can look for abnormal cells (that are caused by HPV) in the lining of the cervix before the cells become precancers

or cancer. All HPV types that affect the genital area can cause abnormal Pap tests. To determine if an abnormal Pap test is caused by HPV, your doctor can order an HPV test.

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, a woman's first Pap test should be at age 21. Be sure to follow your health care professional's recommendation for cervical cancer screenings.

For girls who are not old enough for a Pap test, regular wellness visits are a good way to start lifelong, healthy habits.

While there is no way to screen men for HPV, there is a way for both men and women to help protect themselves from certain diseases caused by HPV.
