We have all read many articles on why nurses should not buy professional liability insurance. A lot of nurses adopt the position that if a nurse has a professional liability insurance, this will give her a deep pocket and make her more likely to be sued.

Others think that the primary reason a nurse should purchase an insurance policy is the fact that the insurance usually ( not always ) includes coverage for legal defense of licensing and disciplinary action commenced against a nurse.

Professional liability companies will only cover attorney fees " after " a complaint is filed and up to a certain amount, if your attorney's fees exceed the limit you are looking to pay for the difference out of your own pocket.

CONCLUSION

A professional liability insurance gives you partial peace of mind, it's important to have one, however it's NOT ENOUGH!!!!

Unions are expensive, you are looking at around $80 per month if you are an RN.

I am in Florida, I have joined American Nurses Union. I only pay $32 per month and I have access to their legal team should I need it, I can even call in for advice and speak to one of their Legal Nurse Consultants.

Their website is www.americannursesunion.com

Hiya, I am also in Florida, although I have worked in Mi, and Tx. I also have done ER for 20 years and included travel nursing.. I taught for 16 years afterthat and now I teach advanced life saving techniques to Nurses, Paramedics etc.. Since I graduated in 1974 *yes I'm old, LOL *  I have always had libability insurance.. Thank God, it's never been used.. It's a very small price for a good nights sleep...Teresa
