Nursing is kind of career that doesn’t stop when the workday ends. Have you heard the latest heroic news?

Six off-duty nurses were hanging out at a Minneapolis bar when a shooting victim leaking blood all over stumbled into the place. Like a well-practiced team, they sprang into action, using the bar towels, first aid kit and the man's own belt to slow the bleeding. See full story here.

This news puts a spotlight on our nursing ethics. It’s really a 24 hours, 7 weeks and 365 days affair. The incident also reminded me of a personal experience that highlighted my calling.

 

One day, in 2006, I was making my routine drive to work (if you call an hour and thirty minutes each way routine) when I happened upon a bad vehicle accident. I naturally stopped to help, as would all you nurses reading this!

A large concrete mixer vehicle had struck a bridge abutment, and the vehicle had massive amounts of damage. I instinctively climbed onto the hood of the truck and assessed and monitored the trapped driver until he was removed from the vehicle. I reassured him right up to the time the helicopter airlifted him to the hospital. Naturally, I felt that I had done my civic duty and wondered how this man was doing over the next few days.

 

 

I was both surprised and honored to receive a letter from the employer of the vehicle. The following are excerpts from the letter:

 

How fortunate for him that the first person on the scene to render assistance was an RN! The driver has now been released from the hospital but has a long recovery period ahead of him. I’m sure your prompt, careful and professional attention greatly contributed to his quick release from the hospital. It is gratifying to know that there are still individuals who are willing to put their busy schedule on hold and come to the aid of others.”
